Oh Turkey Call Gods, Please help me.
So I went out two weeks ago, calls worked just fine. I went out this Saturday, and I could not get a peep out of my pot call or my box call.
I have a Primos Ol' Betsy slate call and I don't remember the box call.
So I took a scotchbrite pad to the slate, tried it and I got a squeak. Which may be fine if I was trying to call baby chickens... tried scuffing up the bottom of the striker as I had seen in multiple places online. Same thing. I went to my dad's house and used a striker he had, worked like a charm. So he let me use his for the last weekend, but not that this has been an issue I want a second one in case this happens again. So.... Any thoughts on what I can do to fix my striker?
As far as the box call, from what I saw online I just need to add chalk. Any specific chalk? Can I take a piece of my daughters sidewalk chalk and rub it on there? (That's what it looked like in one of the videos I saw) Or is there some specific thing I have to get.
Thanks in advance, Your humble, terrible turkey calling, servant

I did pick up some chalk and the box call is good. But I still can't figure out the striker.

What did you use to scuff up your striker? Did it get moisture or oil on it? Don’t know how to turkey hunt but pretty sure your call and striker can be sensitive to both.

I used a sanding screen to scuff up the bottom of the striker, after I used a scotchbrite. Neither seemed to have any effect. I was thinking about cutting off the bottom 1/4" or so and trying to use it. At this point if it doesn't work, damaging it isn't an issue.
It is possible it got moisture on it. But not sure.

I’d try some good old fashion sand paper first

The best chalk I have found is used for chalk lines, the blue stuff. Sidewalk chalk contains oiL to get it tp stick together. Use 80 to 120 grit sandpaper to scuff the surface of your pot call. Emerty cloth lasts longer...…..robin

I've never used anything but a piece of scotch brite pad on my slate calls and all my strikers, on my glass calls I use a conditioning stone from Knight&Hale.

Look online and find the website for the manufacturer. They`ll have instructions on the website on how to care for the call, or, contact them and ask for their recommendations on the issue you`re having.
