The other day after we set off the charge of tannerite I set out 3 snares which look like were pretty heavily traveled slides for beavers. I gave them around a day and went back out to check on them and 2 of the 3 were gone. You could tell that I had gotten something tangled up in them. After closer examination I could definitely tell they were both beavers that had been tangled up in them.
I understand that beavers are powerful animals and especially when they are struggling to get free of something they will definitely tear some ground up but I was truly surprised what these 2 guys done. Long of the short is I lost 2 snares, I hope that they met a humane end after all the struggling. My thing is I'm using wire that's rated for around 100 pounds and they still broke the wire. I've heard that they can grow to be around 50 lbs or so. I think if I lose any more of them I will probably up my wire size considerably.

Go with cable snares, wire will kink and break. Or weight the snare and let the beaver get into deeper water and drown.

70# wow, I didn't know they got that large. After doing some research I started looking into the possibility of doing away with snares and going to a conibear. I don't want to get to involved in it first as what I've seen on youtube and such is you have to get into the beaver's element. I don't have waders or anything like that so that pretty well limits me to doing it in the warmer months or where I don't have to get chest deep in the water.
As for the drowning sets I will probably get into those pretty heavily this spring/summer. I haven't done one of them yet, I am looking into it right now and seeing if it is something I can make or have to buy. Thanks for the replies guys.

Beaver snares I always use a double swivel system on land, single swivel on drowning sets. On land I use 3/32 cable. Snare wire kinks and breaks to easy with beaver...but holds a nice loop. Otter I use 3 swivel system, they roll like a alligator in snare or trap.

70# wow, I didn't know they got that large. They are supposed to get to 90#. That's why I took the time to put the link up there, read it, it tells you about them.

When trapping was worth the time and effort I used to go with my dad to the fur houses to get supplies and seen plenty of 90# beavers there waiting to be skinned. Heck I was only 50# back then, they looked big enough to ride on.

That definitely explains my snares coming up missing then. I will make sure and remove the ones I have out then. Thanks a lot guys.

Little update, went out to the lake to do some fishing on my new kayak and come to find out the beavers are at it again. After leveling their old den with a 20LB charge of tannerite, they have been working overtime and now it is around 3 1/2 to 4 feet tall. Much taller than the older one.
Have to get back at them and start thinning them out and probably end the year with another "send off" of their den with, I was thinking 30LB or so of Tannerite.

Trap them first is my suggestion. Unless you like the boom factor.

Well who doesn’t like the boom factor. Just saying the boom isn't going to control them and likely make it harder to catch them. It might control them if they are in it when it goes BOOM.
