If I were to catch a limit of crappie and go to the cleaning house to start cleaning and another person comes by offering me their limit of crappie, am I able to take them or would I be considered over the limit at that time?

You would be legal in taking them as long as the person gifting them to you provides the information required by the Indiana Administrative Code posted below.
IC 14-8-2-7"Animal" Sec. 7. "Animal", for purposes of IC 14-22, includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, crustaceans, and mollusks.
312 IAC 9-2-8 Possession restrictions (f) A wild animal that is gifted, left unattended while in the field, or not in the immediate vicinity of the individual who took the wild animal while in the field must have a tag attached or be in a container or bag that has the following information: (1) The name and address of the individual who took the animal. (2) The total number and species of wild animals taken. (3) The date the wild animal was taken. (4) The signature of the individual who took the animal.
