Well I am new to coyote hunting/trapping. Reading up on different bait types, I decided to make my own for an experiment. In a plastic tub I have 4 pounds of ground venison (too long in the freezer), a few eggs, topped off with a can of salmon that was out of date. Mixed it up, closed it and let it stew in the mud room for a few days. I opened it a little to sniff. When I came to, my wife was yelling at me get that #### out of here!
Oh my God, they will smell that stuff in St. Louis....

After season I will pick up deer road kill and get a tag for them. I use them for bait. I place one 100 yards out my back window that I can see even at night with a good moon. The others I will stake down in the woods and put traps around them. Works pretty good.

Just make sure you stake it down they will drag it off. Put traps around the azz end that is where they go first. They more mangled the road kill the better I have found out.

What do you shoot? I will buy a new rifle at some point. For 80-100 yards I use a .22 magnum with high- velocity 2300 fps polymer tipped hollow points. Makes a a good hole. Savage makes reasonably priced rifles in several calibers, the Axis.

For coyotes, I'd go with a .223 and a 52-55g bullet. Think about a semi-auto for a faster 2nd or 3rd shot.
If you wanted a dual purpose rifle, go a bit bigger and go .243, use lighter weight bullets for the coyotes, heavier bullets for deer on private ground. I use the 85g Barnes TSX bullet in my .243 for whitetails and it works really well.

Thanks - they are getting bold - I saw 2 near the barn a couple weeks ago - all I had with me was my Beretta which I emptied. Talk about 0-60! Man, can they move

You should put some sodium benzoate in there to stop it from rotting to nothing.

I put the stuff outside, birds are falling out of the sky, paint is peeling, and the dogs are under the bed. It makes a gut shot deer smell like roses...the salmon put it over the top

What is that? Where do you get it? Its a preservative, if you look at most food ingredients it is in there. You can get it at any trapping supply distributors. I have 4 jars of ground beaver sacks that are atleast 15 years old, some still have a pinkish look to them. I think there is still some jars of bobcat meat about the same age out in my shed.
