I applied for 3 pronghorn and a deer tag in Wyoming, unsuccessful on all. Getting desperate now, applied in South Dakota for a couple deer tags today. Hopefully that draw works out for ya. You’re not gonna know what to do if you’re not running around out west a few times this fall.

I put in for a doe tag that I didn't draw first time around but given this year I am not counting on anything. This year is gonna be whitetail and waterfowl type of year for me.

Didn't Colorado just have some 2nd chance tags available? Yes, I'll be trying for a few, but probably will be facing pretty steep odds. Colorado also sells licenses throughout the fall that other hunters turn back for a refund. I have been lucky enough to get deer tags that way the past two years.

Check Wyoming too, I just got a notice that the leftover licenses are available Monday.

Looks like I might have drawn a South Dakota West River mule deer tag.

Woodmaster and Dean Stallion drew an elk tag for Wyoming. Not sure what part of Wyoming though.

Personally I think that is low if you don't have the equipment. Where are you going to sleep? Do you have a backpack? Binoculars, spotting scope, rangefinder, boots, etc., etc. And forget about $2.50/gallon gas.

I sent him a packing list and a link to the CPW website for tag costs (let alone fuel for his Jeep on 35s) and he was kind of in shock. There is a HUGE difference in equipment needed to hunt in the intermountain west versus whitetails in the eastern half of the country. I always ask this question of people wanting to do an elk/mule deer western hunt ..."Do you plan on doing this as a regular thing or just once in a lifetime?" If it is a one time thing you are probably better going with an outfitter for the cost vs return.

Another thing to keep in mind is if you are fortunate enough to kill an elk. They are a large animal to pack out. On a guided or semi guided hunt it’s not your problem.

When my cousins hunted in Co. if one shot one, the other 2 would quit hunting that day just to helo get it out of the woods before dark. They even bought an "elk skidder" which is a chainsaw motor with a capstan on it instead of a clutch/bar/chain to help pull the elk uphill (they never fall uphill from you). That alone cost them $1K between it and the rope needed.

No success in the Colorado secondary draw, not really surprised though.
I purchased my Wyoming and Montana points today. I'm getting enough points built up to have a few options in the coming years.
I'm still waiting on the Arizona deer draw to be finalized, I'm hopeful but not expecting a tag there this year.
I may also try to snag a reissued Colorado deer tag this fall, as I have the last couple of years.
Outside of those few remaining possibilities, it looks like I'll have Arizona elk, South Dakota whitetail, and probably Colorado bear trips this year.

Why not a New Mexico off-base Gemsbok hunt?
