Well, now that the central zone is over I am thinking about heading to the south zone for one last hunt this weekend. After having really good luck this year as a beginner, I am hoping to have the same south of me. Has anyone been to goose pond lately? I hear it freezes easily so might be a wash. Any tips on where to go when the ponds are freezing up? I have heard of Wabash River Conservation Areas are promising but all I have is a kayak.

Well I take that back, doesn't look like Goose Pond is considered the south zone. Might have to try the wabash river somehow

Goose Pond is central. And it's a block of ice now.

Before you try your luck on the Wabash you might want to go with someone who has hunted the river under these icy conditions, there is no room for mistakes as far as your equipment is concerned.

Play it safe and concentrate on geese, they can be had on dry ground which at this time of the year is much safer than a unforgiving river.

This is very true. A mistake on the river can cost you your life. River takes special equipment. We hunt the river out of a 20 foot extra wide john boat with a 115 horse outboard. When the river is rolling I wouldn't want anything much smaller. As featherduster said. Go with some one with the proper equipment and learn the ropes. Have fun, but be safe.

The wabash ain’t nothing to mess around on especially if you’ve not been around it a lot. It’s not that big but the undercurrent is something fierce. Plus right now it’s littered with icebergs the size of volkswagens in my area
