So I decided to hunt with some family members this past Thursday through the weekend. The only deer any of us saw through the weekend was this dude (pic below)! I hunted alone Thursday night and Friday morning. The rest of the hunts through Sunday a.m. was with 3 other family members. Friday morning at around 8 am I shot a coyote with the Blackout at 80 or so yds. He jumped and yelped and took off, spinning away. It went in to the neighbors property and I couldn’t find him. Now about 9:15 I needed to take a wizz bad so I climbed down from our south single ladder stand and walked over to this huge 3 trunk tree some 20 yds to the NE. I had left my rifle hanging but I had the Glock 23 in my harness vest pocket. As I was standing on the ground “doin’ my thang” I thought I heard a crunching/running noise on the other side of the tree. I grabbed the Glock and started to slowly peak and aim around the tree...thinking it might be another yote!
DANG...There was a deer breathing right down the barrel. I aimed for the vitals and KABOOM!
3 yards away!
40 S&W hand loads I made with Berry hollow points over 5.2 grains of Bullseye powder!
I have never shook so hard in my life! Unfortunately it ended up a button buck. That disappointed me but it is what it is I thought!
And he crumpled in the CRP strip some 30 yards away!
Amazing to think that is the only deer any of us saw, during legal shooting light the whole weekend.
6 total hunts and one deer!?
Anyway, I'm processing him myself and he'll make some good chow!
And to top it off, when I reached up to cut the esophagus, I grabbed the heart and I felt it "beat" a few times! I yanked my hand out, quickly stood up and looked at the deer as if I expected it to get up and run off! Crazy mind games!
So we hung him in the hangin' tree:
A little closer image of the Glock entry. The deer was quartered to me and the exit was behind the other shoulder and lower. Best I could tell I busted up some serious arteries in the lower neck and caught the right lung.
