My Son was I were hunting Illinois' opening gun deer season this past weekend. My son had a nice doe (obviously in estrus) approach his stand being followed by a small fork buck. He was looking to fill his doe tag so he shot the doe which ran only a short distance and died about 25 yards from his stand. Much to his surprise the fork buck refused to leave the doe and instead stood over it. A minute later a larger (but still small) 8 point buck came in and squared off with the fork buck. The 2 fought for a bit before the fork ran off. The 8 point walked over to the dead doe where he began aggressively pawing the ground around her making it look almost like a large scrape. He then began pawing and and licking the doe before trying to mount her. My Son said it was almost comical watching the 8 point repeatedly try only to fail miserably. My son was hoping for a bigger buck so he let the interaction play out for a while in the hopes a larger buck might appear. Eventually my son wanted to field dress the doe so he began to climb down from the stand. The 8 point looked directly at him but refused to leave even when he reached the ground. My son cautiously approached while trying to shoo it off but the deer still refused to leave. He got about 10 yards from it before it took off. He proceeded to field dress the doe only to have the buck return a few minutes later. He hung around for another 20 minutes before fleeing for good but it made for an interesting hunt.

I shot a buck once and it dropped a short distance away. It was by itself when I shot it. I went and got my Dad to help drag it out. When we got back to the buck there were 2 does standing next to it. They wouldn't leave. We got to 15 yards before they finally ran off.

He's lucky the buck didn't charge him . Yes he is, but he was ready if it had. He kept his shotgun ready and a tree between him and the deer.

First year I hunted the park hunt at Versailles myy dad shot a doe that was being chased. She died about 40 yards behind me. After she died an 8 point, that I shot, and a 6 point both tries to get her up to breed her. Both physically hooked her with their antlers and tried to lift her up.

My Son is an Army Ranger who was able to get leave to hunt opening day for the first time in the past 3 years. He's pretty level headed and doesn't take chances if he doesn't have to. It was great hunting with him again.

I'm glad to hear that,I've seen them charge after being shot and know they do sometimes when the rut is on,it can be scary and dangerous,it's something all hunters need to be prepared for. Thank him for his service for me if you get a chance.

3 years ago I took one of the guys from my old unit to our hunting camp in the Flat Tops. He had never taken a buck and was getting ready to PCS out of CO so I told him I would do my best to get him on a deer. I took him to my favorite spot (the same place I shot my bear this year) and posted him in position to cover the majority of the shooting area. About an hour into the sit out comes a group of deer, 2 forkys and 2 does, enters the meadow. He shoots forky #1 and it drops. The other 3 look at him and start to slowly amble up the meadow toward me. They get to about 150m and I drop the second forky (I needed meat). The does don't move and start to feed!! We wait about 5 minutes and then both exit the wood line. He gets to his deer and starts to skin/quarter it. I walk toward mine and get to within about 10m before the does move at all. Even then they just walked slowly away. Just plain weird
