I can't seem to keep the squirrels and rabbits out of my pumpkins and gardens at home (in the city), but when I go looking for them on public land I don't see a single one. I'd appreciate any ideas of where to go and what has worked for you guys in the past. I don't have hunting dogs and tend to alternate between .22 and 12 gauge. Thanks in advance

Thanks in advance Squirrels and rabbits on public land get tons of pressure, very wary. City squirrels are used to people and dont associate them with danger. If you are after them on public land, I'd suggest early morning and early evening, near water sources, possibly just find a food source and sit and wait. Eventually they'll come back out.

Which public spots are you hitting?

You got Wilbur Wright or Atterbury. Both you're going to be hard pressed to find a rabbit without good dogs. Squirrels are there but not in huge numbers. I'd suggest south to Morgan Monroe for squirrels. Rabbits, your best bet without dogs is to find done private land and kick some brush piles.

I was out at Providence Pond yesterday and my dog actually kicked up a couple rabbits while we were looking for woodcock. Area that is closest to the main road will likely be your best bet. Area on the back side of PP just down the side road is THICK

Pack a lunch, come down south, and we'll take the dogs out and put you on some rabbits. But man, you gotta get rid of that 12. For rabbits, that's just wrong on so many levels. Won't mention Nate's name but Ive seen guys blow a hole in the ground when they miss with a 12.

Well you're wrong for it too. Anything over a 28ga. should just be illegal. I find it better to let the dogs run em down but the most I got on the last few was one head and a front leg. Dogs just aren't real considerate to their owner. Again really trying to not name names nfalls116 but I've seen guys miss a rabbit no farther than ten feet and blow a hole in the ground. Also seen guys shoot the head clean off a running rabbit with a .410. That was me. I'll name that one.

I mean maybe it was ten feet or less after you include the 30” barrel but what are numbers really
At least I got to use my e license that day

I blew the head off with a 410 too when I was a kid,it was sitting though, and I've missed them with a 12 gauge too. But a miss is a miss no matter what gauge you're using. I doubt I could hit a running rabbit any better with a 28 gauge than a 20 or a 12,I've seemed to have lost my proper lead over the years for some reason, probably because of lack of doing as much rabbit hunting as I did when I was younger.

If a 10 gage wasnt so heavy I'd take that. Span is a bunny hugger so dont let him fool you. He is the Don Guns of rabbit hunting.
He stands in the field' hands on his hips. "I don't like rabbit hunting, i just love to hear the dogs bark." True story

Way more fun making fun of guys missing too.

I mean heck, it’s the internet if span870 can shoot heads off rabbits with a 410 and no one to back up his claims then anyone can do anything.

^^^^^^^^^ jimstc . Little help here about that rabbit and the .410. I was there and saw it happen. Dogs were running rabbits from the east toward us. I was on the trail and span was just off it. Rabbit ran right at him. Looked like he shot it when the rabbit was at his feet. I was briefly concerned that he shot himself in the foot. True story.

I think he would rather shoot his toe than a rabbit!
