Last Saturday morning I hit the woods with my cousin. We went to our separate spots about 400 yards apart separated by a hardwood ridge. The tree I climbed is next to a creek bed that feeds into a larger creek 70 yards in front of me. Thicket behind me. About 815 a smaller buck appeared along the creek bed and walked by my stand about 20 yards away. He looked like he was on a mission, moving along smelling the ground and heading towards my cousin. After he left I heard a few turkeys but so no more deer. 45 minutes after I saw the first buck I'm startled by a loud crash. At first I thought it was turkeys flying down from roost but it was another small buck, a six point, jumping down in to creek bed and running right under my stand. At this point I'm pretty happy because I've seen two bucks. Which brings the total number of bucks seen from stand this year to two bucks. Suddenly I catch movement coming down the ridge, a large buck, following the same path as buck number two. He jumps down into creek bed and out the other side walking directly to my tree. Now he is clearly the biggest deer I've seen in five years of hunting and I'm trying to calm my self down which is hard to do as he stands directly under my stand at the base of my tree. So far he's offered no shot and as he starts to walk off behind me heading to the thicket I think I might have to watch him walk away never to be seen again. When he's ten yards away and behind a sapling it's now or never. I mouth bleat which freezes him in his tracks. He turns his head back and forth and takes a step. Another mouth bleat. Another pause another step. By now he's probably thinking a Billy goat has climbed a tree in his woods. I'm shaking from the buck fever and the cold. Third mouth bleat finally gets him to turn 45 degrees and I shoot. Hear a good whack at impact and he jumps and takes off. As he runs off I think I see my red fletching sticking outta the deer. It's a nervous wait till climbing down as I've never not had a pass through. After an hour I climb down quietly and walk over to check for blood. I find my arrow sticking in the dirt. Smeared top to bottom with good blood. Forty yards away I find him dead, slid down the creek bank. What I thought was fletching was entrance wound. Shot hit under backstrap and out opposite armpit. Super happy and grateful to get this deer. Also happy to share this day with my cousin. Not in the least because without him the drag up that creek bank and to the truck probably would've killed me. Now as I thank you all for reading this I also ask for a favor. My computer is crashed and my phone is older. Woody maybe you could post a pic for me? Thanks again for reading this, good luck out there, and stay safe.
