I'm not sure if any of you have heard of Len Howells or his "outfitting" service Silver Bow Outfitters, but it's pretty much a scam. I won a raffle for a free hunt out there as long as one paying person went with us, so naturally dad went with me as well as two friends tagged along because you know, bow hunting elk during the rut is a dream hunt for many people. Well first off, we were lied to about who would be guiding us, Len stated he would and promised us this the year before. When we first arrived there that night he disagreed, and proceeded to guide another group from Michigan. We were a bit irritated but this wasn't a serious issue. We ended up getting out with the most knowledgeable guy there which ended up working out. Secondly, we were lied to about how much land he has. He stated that the 100,000's of thousands of acres, that were public, he had the rights to hunt. He claimed that this was his own personal property leading up to the hunt, so we were hunting among every other normal person and the "weekend warrior" locals during the rut. This ruined our hunts multiple times. Our other friends who went with us on the trip had Len's son guide them. Well the first night we were there he went out into town with his girl and got hammered drunk and was up all night, and at their first attempt to call in an bull, he fell asleep, along with the fact he had no idea how to even call or work a bull in the first place. No cow call or anything, he just bugled his head off and then crashed off to sleep. We ended up leaving this two week hunt after the first 4 days as there may have been altercations otherwise. It's just said that he scams people every year to coming out there, he lied to us also on the way out to Montana that everyone who was in camp the previous week at least shot a cow. This is completely false, our guide said that he had one guy make a shot on a bull and they never found it. That was the only action that there was. So all this to say... do all the research you can on people before you go hunt. It sucks that at 14 I had "won" literally my hunt of a lifetime, something I've been dreaming about as long as I can remember and then to be completely devastated like that. Personally it leaves a terrible taste in my mouth as far as Outfitters go, and I think I'll just try DIY hunts myself and learn the hard way how and how not to hunt other game.

That's a shame. I hope the word gets out about this outfitter. Maybe the elk will come our way from KY.

I think you hit on it there at the end. Go DIY. If it turns out to be a terrible experience, you have no one to blame but yourself.
I know you're probably more likely to get an animal with an outfitter, but take elk for example.. You could go hunt 5 or 6 times on your own for the cost of one guided hunt. Just think how much knowledge and experience you would gain going on your own 5 or 6 times, vs. being taken care of by an outfitter for just a few days.

That's what I'm looking to do here in the next few College years. Since I have a full ride I'll be able to work and pay my own way with my roommate to possibly elk and mule deer hunt some in Oregon where he's from👍

The biggest expense you will have out here in the West are your out of state tags. You might consider doing a couple of female tags at first(and definitely compare states) to get Experience. I always consider my hunts as great vacations which may hopefully include some meat If you have in Colorado questions I would be glad to help as much as I can.

Sorry you had a bad experience, but don't throw all outfitters under the bus. There are some good ones out there. Out of curiosity I looked at Silver Bow's website to check their rate for an elk hunt $3500. That price is a pretty big red flag to me. Quality elk hunts are running $6500 and up. Cheap hunts like this almost always just result in a "camping trip carrying guns".
