Important corrections to Indiana Hunting & Trapping Guide Indiana deer and waterfowl hunters need to be aware of two important changes in the print version of the 2017-2018 Hunting & Trapping Guide.
Due to recent legislation passed this year by the Indiana General Assembly, hunters can no longer use rifles when hunting deer on public land. “Public land” includes both state and federal property. Before the change, the use of rifles on public land had been legal.
It remains legal to use a muzzleloader, shotgun or handgun when hunting deer on public land in accordance with deer hunting regulations.
The waterfowl correction is that the daily bag limit for black ducks is two. The printed Hunting and Trapping Guide mistakenly states the bag limit as one.
The online Indiana Hunting & Trapping Guide has been updated with these corrections. You can view the updated guide at wildlife.IN.gov/2343.htm
For more information on rifle requirements for deer hunting on private land, visit wildlife.IN.gov/7389.htm and click on “Equipment.”

Let's hope all this is corrected by NEXT SEASON....(including the sunset clause that pcrs have been put under by this snafu)...
I wonder how much lower the firearms harvest will be this year?

Will they check every hunters firearm before they enter public land? Can’t foresee this as enforceable. Who is going to correct every hunting guide at Walmart? Not everyone has internet.
Just curious?

I wonder how many people, like myself, sold their slug gun? I had an Ithaca with a fixed slug barrel. Useless for anything other than deer hunting. I traded it for my .44 Marlin the first year it was legal.
Personally, I'd roll the dice if still hunting on public land. Just my opinion based upon a recent conversation with a CO.

I'd also keep a copy of the 2017-2018 Indiana Hunting & Trapping Guide in my pack.

I just sent this message to my state representative and senator:
I just saw that the DNR was given guidance on a change in hunting law. A law passed this year, HB 1415, allows certain to be used to deer hunt on private land. Unintentionally it made certain firearms illegal for use on public land. I would like to see if there is anything you can do to make an emergency provision to continue to allow those firearms this season until the law can be amended. The hunting guide has incorrect information and many hunters are going to unknowingly break the law. Please let me know if you are able to do anything to work through this matter before deer firearms season opens on November 18th.
