The decision not to push is tough....my boy is 5 and youth season is just around the corner. There just isn't a gun made that is small enough to go after deer. I've tried. Just not able to shoulder and see through a scope well enough to do it safely... He loves putting rounds through his Crickett though....iron sights, 25 yards off of a shooting stick while seated. Next year buddy.... We will be out next weekend though just to watch and take some pictures.

Shorts n t-shirts in the blind for sure...
Nice thing is he should see some action. The deer are flat out mowing the radishes down.
He went with me to set the blind up and we pulled the plotwatcher card while there....perfect setup for a kid.

Maybe it'll help, maybe not but I started my daughter out with a H&R 357 with a red dot type scope. She couldnt shoot it free hand at that age but off a rest she was deadly and that choice of scope took the eye relief part out of the equation.

I've got a 77/44 and a Model 7 in 243...a buddy has a handi in 243 I can use.
Not tried a red dot.
Even on a 10/22 he can't get far enough forward to get anywhere near where he needs to be.
I'll keep the red dot in mind for next year.

My son started hunting with a Rossi miniloader. Killed his first deer with it last youth season.

Something that you may want to look into is a Caldwell field pod. Buddy's 9 year old uses it and shoots a 44 h&r

If your problem is the length of pull on rifles. Maybe could shoot a pistol. The BATF now says they don't care if you shoulder the Sig Brace so it would be just like a rifle to him. I hunt with a .300 blackout pistol just to get around the regs on public land.

I have a Contender (22lr) with a youth stock I had custom made for my 7 year old grandson. With a bipod he's getting on to it pretty well. I'm not quite ready to add a deer legal barrel to it yet but his time is getting closer.

I started typing a response last night about using a pistol and a rest, but then I had a thought that pistols were not allowed during the youth season. I need to research that.

There is also an adjustable stock out there for the handi-rifles, I have a buddy who started his kids with one.

Yeah.... looks like that has changed from no pistols to any legal gun....... didn't realize that till I just looked!

Well Greg, I'll give ya credit. I have a xbow that I bought for my dad to use that's just been sitting there in the closet....I brought it out and let E shoot some off a bipod stick.
Stock is adjustable so I could get eye relief right.
He put 4 bolts in a 4" circle from 15 yards. Didn't want to chance losing them.
Moved him back to 25 and he put 2 more in there.
We will put a bunch more through it this week and see....
The Deadshot will help greatly with the weight.

New one on me too... In the past a hand gun was a no-no for a youth ..Now its.. That says "a" legal firearm. If you look on the chart graph in the book where it shows bag limits, and weapon allowed per each season it shows handguns and muzzleloading handguns are not permitted during youth season. Once again, Indiana Hunting Regulations are as clear as mud.
