Well, the last thread this apparently cursed camera was involved in was bizarre, so it figures the sequel would be. ( I thought, "good grief imagine what the forum guys will say now) My son John and I ( the oldest who has had many adventures shared with you all) went out to check my cameras this afternoon. We got some decent pics on the first two but when we got to the third (a Bresser 5 MP model, around $35 at Walmart) it hadn't got anything. I figured it was the batteries since we had to change out the ones on it's twin last week. We came prepared and put in brand new Energizer AA batteries. I know they were in the right way and what-not because I double checked the +/- symbols before I put them in. We were hanging about waiting to see if it was going to work when there was a fairly loud "pop" from the unit and a blue flash. ( we had not shut the battery door ). While we were still exclaiming about these events, there was another pop, some sizzling, and a third and final pop. At this point it began oozing acid and I had the presence of mind to borrow John's camera and take a short video. Note about halfway through how John takes a look at the trailcam and ducks out of frame. If you listen close you can hear it crackling and sizzling. Yes, this is the very same camera that caught the mystery Sheriff deputy that spawned such a long thread. www.youtube.com/watch?v=aiTb4j-O7Jg&feature=youtu.beAnyway, what in the world??? Woody, I posted this on the Huntingindiana FB page to hopefully give it a little pop before I put it anywhere else on FB.

The deputy sabotaged it to hide the evidence.

Lol, I think the problem is you bought it from WalMart Perhaps...but they sell fairly expensive ones as well. ( including Cuddeback) A lot of mid-grade models. One I saw that wasn't that expensive but looked interesting was the Primos Bullet-proof 2. The easy setup and purported battery life got my attention.

BTW, I'm going to go back and video the innards if I can get it open and merge the two videos. ( hopefully)

I've found several warnings about exploding AA batteries. One was mixing old and new ( not applicable ) one was mixing different types ( also not applicable). The other was putting them in wrong...possible I guess, but unlikely. I peered quite closely at which way they went in because the device that holds the batteries is hard to remove. I'll fess up if this was the case. I knew alkaline batteries could leak but actually blowing up was news to me.

I went back and checked and I can absolve the camera manufacturer of any responsibility. It was pure operator error. I would have sworn on a stack of Bibles that I had all those batteries in right, but the evidence is damning. One battery, just one--was in backwards. I suppose that has to be the problem. I found one warning--from Cuddeback-- about backwards batteries causing this kind of issue, but otherwise I never realized they could actually blow. The batteries affected were just kind of split, but they leaked copious amounts of acid. Still don't know what the dang Deputy was doing in that house though.
