Would a turkey choke work for geese? I'm guessing pattern would hold tight for longer and get more distance but might be a tougher shot on close birds.

I would recommend a modified choke. A modified in lead is about a full in steel. I shot all my ducks over decoys with improved cylinder, and late geese with a modified.

I use BB for most of the goose hunts but 2 and BBB work fine.
IC choke over decoys to modified fo me as well. Depends on the day but usually have modified in the gun.
I use experts and faststeel. The expensive stuff may be better but a miss is a miss and my guess is most folks that claim steel is inferior are poor shots to begin with.

You can use the alternatives thru it but not steel. It could split the choke. Get some different chokes and pattern them with different shells. Brand A may work good in one size while brand B won't. They all seem to be different. imo

Best thing to do is to pattern the gun will all your chokes and your preferred loads. The tighter the choke does not always mean the further you can shoot. A lot of times with steel a really tight choke performs far worse than an open choke because you cannot compress the steel. The more you squeeze steel the more is pushes back and if it doesnt split the choke its going to spread back out when it leaves the barrel.
