The number of collisions caused by deer is just one of the interesting data points contained in a state report released this month.t.co/DmzA4eSYxy

So more deer get hit in areas that have more deer friendly habitat? Who would have thought that!

If Bill Friends sees this he will want reintroduce his "double the county limits on deer in the top 30 deer/vehicle collision counties" . Politicians in game management - don't you just love it?

I've been at this game a long time. Not taking anything away from previous deer biologists or newspaper outdoor writers but this is the best and most comprehensive deer harvest summary and well written article I've ever seen.

Living in Allen Co I can see why it is #2 in deer collisions. Hard to see a deer with your face buried in a cell phone. Also being the county with the largest area probably helps. My section of rural road is posted for 35 MPH and I think the drivers around here believe that is the minimum. In addition the county has several major highways traversing it including I69, US30, SR37, SR14, SR24. Add that to areas that have decent habitat with little or no hunting pressure and the deer hit numbers will be high.
You can add me to drivers that did not report deer/vehicle interfaces. Hit one that broke a headlight and cracked my bumper. Damage was less than deductible so why turn it in? That and the deer got away.

The more traffic the more accident's. My home county of Switzerland saw a big increase in deer accidents when the 2 Riverboat Casino's moved in. (Rising Sun, Vevay). Casino's are still here but attendance is down close to 60% from the first few years of operation's. No shocker that deer accidents are down substantially as well getting our County moved from a 8 bonus antlerless to a 4.

They are not just reporting number of deer and vehicle collisions but do it on a rate basis of millions of miles driven.. That is an important qualifier...

Living in Allen Co I can see why it is #2 in deer collisions. As a former Allen Co. resident, I'll add that there are many "large" privately owned properties in Allen Co. that see zero hunting pressure because the landowners don't hunt them themselves and they are reluctant to grant permission for others to hunt them either. Even though the county is home to Indiana's 2nd largest city, it still offers a large amount of suitable habitat for deer. Having said that, I've seen trophy bucks in urban areas of the county (and within city limits) where you would not expect to see them. That being said, there are many new housing additions under construction and more planned every year so the habitat is ever-shrinking. I would expect to see Allen Co. drop from the #2 slot within the next few years as a result.

Who developes the millions of miles driven??? That has to be a guess at best, especially in a very rural county.
