For the last decade or so I have seen more cats and/or dogs from the tree stand than I have deer! The sad part of all this is that the state allows these animals to run free and would not mind fining or jailing you or I for killing one. That's just wrong! If my cattle get out and eat your beans I got to pay up but if your dog comes to my place almost daily and kills the rabbit and quail I spend thousands of dollars in habitat funds to keep, it is perfectly OK with the state!
Wild cats have never been a danger to me or anyone I know. However, years ago I was cleaning up behind a construction company in an area that was known to have feral hogs.Four of us were cutting firewood out of a bulldozed pile when we were attacked by five wild feral dogs.We fought them off with chainsaws for what seemed to be 1/2 hour. They finally gave up and we were too tired from the fight to cut any more wood.
Along with that, some 15 years ago or so Major Swinney of the Indiana Air Guard went turkey hunting one morning before work. He had only taken 3 rounds for his 12 ga. At some point in the morning, a strange feeling came over him. He turned and looked to find a large dog in mid-air attacking him.He got one round off and injured the dog as three more were upon him. He killed two of them then ran as he was out of ammo. The last dog didn't give chase but Matt never went into the woods without plenty of ammo again either.
I am thankful the state allows us to carry for protection while out and about. Wade
