I switched from 3 to 11 to 7 to 3 shift and am only able to hunt weekends or evenings now. So last weekend of goose hunting was pretty good. Got 6 on Saturday and 2 on Sunday to finish the 2016-2017 goose season with 50 geese.

Nice shooting.
Were you hunting over water or dry ground? asking for a friend.

Nice shooting. Were you hunting over water or dry ground? asking for a friend. Kind of both. A pond behind us and a fresh alfalfa field in front of us with flooded field farther out. Mainly decoys in alfafa field and couple floaters in flooded field.

We use to bake the geese but we would take a knife and cut up orange peels into wedge and then poke holes in the geese after cleaning them. Then stick the orange wedges in the holes and then bake the geese with stuffing inside with the oranges inside them. The oranges inside the body cavity and the orange peels in holes on the outside of the carcass would give it a great orange citrus flavor and kill the wild goose taste and make the meat more delicious. I did that with ducks too. They tasted so much better. I've not hunted waterfowl in a long time. Try it you will really like it too.
The most Geese were ever shot at Hovey's lake was three. But that was just one trip. My next door neighbor was the waterfowl hunter. I was just a tag along. I didn't have the proper dry and winter coats and clothing to withstand the cold weather. His father took him hunting down at Goose Pond in Lower Gibson County or maybe it was in Northern Posey County. Look it up. My friend ended up buying some property down at Goose Pond and still was hunting down there and building new camps on the property until he died of colon cancer this past year. He would walk across the yard from his parents house to my parents house when we were still going to college and home for Christmas Vacation and wake me up by tapping on my bedroom window. He would get me up at 3:30 am or 4 and we would get ready and drive down to Hovey's lake to make it there in time for the DRAW. His friend Robert or his older brother Bill would go with us. As they gave parties of there people preference and a chance at the first draw. There were only so many waterfowl blinds out on the lake and only so many goose hunting pits in the area. So they would limit the numbers of waterfowl hunters on the State Property back in those day. Not sure how they do it these days. There is no longer a IDNR office at Hovey's lake where it use to be. It got flooded out and the IDNR decided to move a trailer down there. The last time I went down there to talk with the Property Manager he said that they were going to buy some more land that was on higher ground but closer to Mt. Vernon. I've not heard anything since but they were going to try to build a new HQ on that ground in the future. That's the last I heard. I wish that they would reconsider and built a new HQ on stilts near the launch ramp over looking the main lake to better police the area.

I may have to give that a try.
We usually slice the goose or duck breast up and fry in grape seed oil with Canadian steak seasoning on it.
