I've got a 2000 Polaris 325 Trail Boss and the plastic valve cover on the front side of the engine fell off and was spraying oil everywhere. It's just a plastic screw in cap like thing but if I try getting it any tighter than just finger tight it strips out and loosens up again. It's got a thing on the front for a socket so I assume it should be tighter than finger tight, especially with all the vibrations and bouncing around that an ATV does, but I can't find any info at all about installing it. I can even find parts stores online that sell them, but no installation info. Anybody on here have any ideas or do I need to talk to a bike shop or something??

Get a new one and just tighten it "snug"

Thanks,I wondered if getting a new 1 would be the way to go,just didn't want it falling out again and wasn't sure how tight to get it.

You could always safety wire it or put some silicone on it. That's what I had to do with all the bolts when I raced sport bikes. The silicone does a decent job holding plugs and things in place by but safety wire is probably the most secure. Just make sure the safety wire is on the side pulling the hex tighter and it shouldn't back out.
I would agree to start with a new one though.

I've got silicone on the old 1 now because I was going to try it that way but I don't have any oil for it. I get paid Friday and after thinking about it decided to get a new 1 and the oil. Being on the front side of the engine I don't know if there's much of a place to fasten a wire other than the exhaust pipe but I'll look.

I would say that a new one will fix it up good. I still wouldn't think that it would need anymore than hand tight, but silicone might be good to put on a new one.

We would just put silicone over the top of it once it was fastened in place kind of like a tape. When I raced we had to safety wire our headers so all of my exhaust bolts were already drilled. If there is a bolt anywhere near it you can just get a washer and drill a hole to tie the safety wire to.

I just ordered a new 1 this morning. He's thinking too that over the years it probably loosened some then the vibration sort of wore it down. He said they normally just hand tighten them and give them just a smidge more with a ratchet, which I tried to do with the old 1,but hopefully works with the new 1. If not I'll silicone it with the black silicone like the guy at the bike shop said.

No I didn't,threads look fine to me but with it being plastic they were probably just wore down and I think, and so does everybody I've talked to,I'd be better off with a new 1. The cover and o-ring combined only come to $31.

The new one worked fine even without silicone.

The new one worked fine even without silicone. I figured so. Now you know, Check the oil, check the valve cover.
