You’ve probably seen the signs as the leaves fall. Turkey Shoot they proclaim. Indiana has a lot of them. But, most Hoosiers don’t have a clue what they are. WildIndiana is here to give you the 411 on this Hoosier tradition. buff.ly/2fUYy1n

I remember our local conservation club would host one of these back in the 60's, both the event and club have gone by the wayside, shame.

There's a conversation club near me that has a few of them each year.

Ive always wanted to shoot my Grandfathers old long barrel Remington 870 wingmaster in one of the contests. I've been told that gun still wins those contests.

I went to one a few weeks ago. It was $2 per shoot. Dropped a $10 bill and had a blast. Took my 870 with a turkey choke. I came very close to winning in one round. There were some guys there that seemed to be "experienced." A couple of tips from this novice: get there early! We arrived about 20 minutes after it started and had to wait over an hour before we could shoot. Take your kids. They do special youth rounds and the kids love it. It really is a fun time!

I remember my stepdad taking me when I was 16. I won a turkey, ham and some money. That target didn't move, so I could hit it.

That's how I started way back in the 60's. My brother's took me out and had a blast every time. The old Remington with extended full choke did the trick. We had to go to new places after a few years. Too much complaining from some of the others that we always competed against.
