My guess is Hen of the woods.

At the base of an oak?? Then I would also (in my very limited knowledge of them) say it is a Hen of the Woods. The ones I've found in my woods are about shot now but you may have a little more time down there Woody.

Yup. Never had one, but they're supposed to be pretty good eating.

I would say that what I see is a fresh Hen of the Woods if it's at the base of an Oak tree. If it is a Hen then you cut it with a knife at the ground, take it home and soak it for a couple hours in water to kill the bugs then pluck it keeping the feathers or leaves and throwing away the core.

As long as the core doesn't have dirt inside it, I cut that up too and keep it.
I think they are good eating, but a PITA to clean.
