Howdy. Looking for any info on deer hunting at Sugar Ridge FWA or Patoka. Just moved over to Pike County from Southern Illinois. I've hunted Sugar Ridge a few times, when I lived in Indiana. My experience has been negative as to hunting Deer there. Like I've said I've only hunted there a few time, which was back in the late 1970 & early 1980's, and I never saw a single legal Deer there. I mostly did my Deer Hunting on my own or private property located in other States like Kentucky & Colorado. Now if you are a Squirrel Hunter, then Sugar Ridge would be fine for that species, but for Deer there are also too many Hunters & few Deer.

Sugar ridge is all spoil banks and mature foods. Pick a ridge with oaks that are dropping and climb a tree

Sure it's much different now since your experience is from over 30 years ago. Go put some boots on the ground with a stand on your back. If you find some hot sign set up and hunt right then. Best chance is always that first sit.

I own my property here in Central Kentucky, which offers far more & better hunting than I ever had in Indiana. I simply don't like hunting public property as there are too many Hunters. As a positive note regarding Sugar Ridge, they do have an excellent rifle/pistol range.

Opening week of firearms is usually crowned as it is on most public lands. After that and most of archery season it is not horrible at all. There are a lot of deer and turkeys there and the adjoining Interlake property and several very large bucks taken off of both each season.
As mentioned, most of it is spoil banks or reclaimed mine ground with some spots scattered throughout that were never mined. Deer can be two hills over and you never see them and they are not easily patterned.
I would check out Google Earth and find some pinch points well off the road and have at it. It's hard to put that many acres together in any state and say that there is not good hunting somewhere on it.

I don't know how the hunting is or not but like I always say, at least it's not Illinois.

driving back in to work tonight for an emergency, I saw quite a few does on the backroads near where I plan to hunt. Freezer first, then antlers. Thanks to all who posted!
