We hunted it today, and did like the place a lot, but saw no deer and heard no shots. How many no-shows were there? I am considering going next Friday to try for a stand-by draw. I have hunted Muscatatuck several times and never had much luck, but I am "bucked out" and it is a cool place. Very few hunters there.

I hate hunting out of an elevated stand when it's very cold. So I hunt from a ground blind during cold weather conditions. If breezy I don't go out hunting at all.

3 sets of base layers, 2 walmart "heavy weights" work well together. and the gs series heavey weight base I got buy one get one on black friday. I wore it and a walmart fleece base set... my goose was cooked by time I walked to my spot. Also A gs fleece pants and 1/4 zip layer. Then I either have browning med weight hydro fleece suit or the redhead duk back coveralls and the 2:1 parka to match. I may look like camo michelin man but Antartica wouldent have anything on me boys... the only problem I do have are sock options my muck woodsmaster boots are too tight for layered wool blend socks which are too thick for two pair so I wear normal heavy sock then one set of wools... I see some under armour insulated muck style boots and their extreme base layer in my future... where I hunt you may spend all season just trying to see a deer. Let alone be in a range and have a clear shot. Good thing I love the woods no factories and no warehouses within miles!

I think besides the fella on a poop run and a guy that drove past before the evening hunt was the only other 2 hunters we saw....and we honestly drove a good portion of the park.

The coldest I hunted was in 1987, it was a balmy +3 degrees going out to the tree stand before day light and at 10am I shot my first good buck (10pt) and it was +8 degrees. It was dead calm and I could hear him at least 500 yards away and saw him around 400 yards. There was snow on the ground (1") and it was easy to see him. This is my #1 hunting remembrance. Back then a lot of hunters ended the season with empty tags like I did in 1986 hunting everyday both gun and muzzleloader.

Were you able to call that big boy close or was that just the way he was going? I guess I'm wondering how effective are that what calls this time of year.

Were you able to call that big boy close or was that just the way he was going? I guess I'm wondering how effective are that what calls this time of year. No calls and shot him at 10 yards across the creek. I was about 75 yards from the property line looking over a big creek and the other property was a long big hill. The buck came over the hill (I could hear him, but not see him). Buck came straight to me at a very slow pace and when he got to the creek he turned broadside to follow the creek up stream and that's when I blasted him with my brand new 1987 Thompson Center 50 cal muzzleloader. He was buck #2 and the 5th year hunting. Went from a 1985 4 pointer to the 1987 10 pointer. That buck was the biggest from the group to date. Note: I was the youngest of the group and they gave me a hard time teasing and having fun the next couple years until it was beat. Of course, I gave them a hard time not going that day, I was the only one of a group of 15. Bragging rights for three years. Back then just seeing deer was a success. That's when I lived in Fort Wayne, but hunted near East Enterprise in Switzerland county.

I've got some things to do, so not sure when I'll get out to hunt. If I can squeeze out the last hour, I will.
...I guess I didn't hide well enough ...gotta find some more spots.

Headed out now. Little windy, but it's worth a try. Still have a buck tag in my pocket and running out of time.

Got several social functions going so I'll be out tomorrow afternoon, Saturday morning and Sunday afternoon. Not sure yet on next week... It can be tough to get out this time of year. I've been looking for a doe and I'm finding it difficult to get out with Church Christmas activities and kids school activities. I took yesterday afternoon and saw nothing. Don't really have a food source on any of my places after fields have been plowed so I'm probably not missing much.

Not sure if you still hunt on the bend behind the Church off of 26 but there was 4 does in that field this morning on my way to work...
