Oats?

A buddy of mine from Texas is a big fan of forage oats for food plots. I've never planted them. My go to plots have always been beans, brassicas and clover.
Curious if anyone here uses oats regularly? If so, when do you plant and what do you like about oats?

I use the WTI Oats plus. We have had great success with them. The deer really seem to like them and are feeding during my prime hunting months of Oct and Nov.

How do you get them planted that deep ? I have a disc , seed spreader & a cultipacker and always skipped out on oats because of planting depth

I have had good success with Buck Forage Oats. Disc, spread seeds, cultipack. Do some experimenting with how much down pressure/angle that you set the disc at.

With the equipment you have I would disc first then level out the soil with the cultipacker. After that just broadcast the seed and then cultipack again or drag with something.

My chufa was planted at 1-2" depth. I just disked in the seeds by setting my disk wheels and the covered with a light drag. It worked good.

Everything I read says 1 1/2-2" deep . I bought some oats and after I disc I thought about broadcasting them, cultipacking then run drag on them .

I till, broadcast and then run a draw over them and the cultipacker (or run the 4 Wheeler over it).
I think oats will come up just about anywhere. The deer like them, but they don't handle frost as well as winter wheat.

With the equipment you have I would disc first then level out the soil with the cultipacker. After that just broadcast the seed and then cultipack again or drag with something. They are supposed to be 1 1/2" deep, and this method might leave them too shallow. Shallower planted seeds, will dry out faster if the soil dries out. The deeper the seeds the slower the soil dries out. If you are watering the plot, no big deal. I've had Buck Forage Oats (which are supposed to be frost resistant) spring back to life the next Spring, and if not cut, set seed heads. I haven't tried other brands of Oats.

Establishing A LOT of first time plots on the new property of mine. Except for the full brassica plots, Oats/Rye/Wheat will be overseeded over everything! Out future clover/chicory plots will have about 50-100 pounds/acre of the three overseeded over them. They help limit brows on the young clover...also help fight weeds next year but when you mow they die off and the clover can take over (will overseed clover in spring with more clover).
Oats/Rye/Wheat alone I'd go 200lb/acre rate and do not be afraid to utilize as late as mid/late September depending on weather you'll have fresh sub 5 inch growth in bow season and possibly even come mid-november. Deer will dig for it similar to brassicas come the winter...and green up in the spring.

Broadcast seeding these is not a problem...we'll broadcast and roll so long as soil is present and vegetation is killed. Plant at a slightly higher rate but never had an issue.

Planted my forage oats Thursday. Disked, tilled with tiller, broadcast seed then rolled with cultipacker. All ready coming up as of yesterday.

Things are looking good. Broadcast oats, peas, chicory, ran a drag over it and then broadcast turnips and raddishes over that.
