I've heard and read a lot of different things about using a buck decoy. I had a cheap doe decoy that my deer were afraid of, but I must say that it did not look real at all! My deer would make every effort to go around that thing. I gave it to my buddy's son as a target.
Do any of you use a buck decoy?
I had a video where there was a lot of noise of something big moving through the brush just behind my stand. The deer and coons on the field ran away. This was around 10:30 pm. As much as I want to think it was a bipedal monster, I'm thinking the bucks stage just inside the woods around my plot. I'd like to draw them out. With the number of good size bucks around my plot, they'll probably be fighting around the rut, and was thinking about getting a buck decoy.

Have you talked to bowhuntIN(I think thats his name on here). He had one in his archery videos and it looked like a cardboard cut out almost.

I've yet to kill a good buck using a buck decoy, and they are a pain to haul in and set up, but they do work, and I've had some very exciting hunts using one.

You wanna go lifelike then get ya a Dave Smith buck decoy. Dave Smith??? You must think I have money like Woody. I'm thinking I might have to go with the cardboard cutout and use it like the turkey fan and sneak up on them.

Those Montana silhouette decoys look great and work good. Not very costly either and a whole lot easier than toting in a full body decoy.

I did order a full-bodied Flambeau. I don't have very far to walk at my food plot. I'll just use him around the rut. I think he was $152, but I tell you for sure, if I had Woody's money, I'd have me a Dave Smith.

Make a decy out of apples and acorns it should help I've used apple cider and vanilla based acorn scent attractants, even boiled down some white oak acorns once, never saw that they helped much.

I got my decoy today, but they left out the antlers. He'll make a nice boss babe if the other bucks are into that sort of thing.

I made an apple cider mix that was boiled and poured over a rag in a baggie. It was ready to take hunting. If you can't put out apples, just smell like one.

I've heard it said that while a human may recognize the scent of beef stew, if a deer sniffed it, he'd smell the individual carrots, onions, gravy, etc. So a human with a cover scent smells just like that to a deer, human + dirt or whatever. I still use a scent spray though, mainly ankle-down. In any case, I'd rather smell like an apple than a deer turd...

I have to return my buck decoy. I hate returning items. The supplier wouldn't ship just the antlers, so I'm getting a full refund. I have enough bucks to fight on their own; maybe I'll actually get to see it this year.
From looking at my videos and photos, my buck to doe ratio looks to be 1:1. This isn't good. I know I can't do a lot to control this with just 10 acres and hunters all around, but I don't think I'll take a doe this year either on my Martinsville land.
I still want to feed families, and may take some in Brownsville, but if anyone wants to donate one, I'll take it. I'd probably drive two hours one way to get it.

I'd be more than happy to lend a hand in reducing the number of bucks you have around to adjust that buck to doe ratio problem your having lol I'm thinking the only reason I have them is because of the hunter harassment just after firearm opening. I was late getting to my plot; it was probably the 3 day of that season when I got there. Every evening of firearm and muzzleloader season they would shoot starting about one hour before sunset and go until dark. I guess I should thank them ...if I get one. They sure are hanging around my food plot a lot.
