Is there any public water to train retrivers with a gun? I assume blanks would be needed. I am in central Indiana.

Just a suggestion you might want to take that pup with you and hit a few properties that might hold ducks in the fall. Introduce yourself along with that cute little pup to the property owner and ask if the the 2 of you can train on their place. It might open the doors to a place to hunt this fall. You know it's hard to say NO to a kid with a puppy.

Just getting into labs myself and I'm learning that it's best to get some land training in first befor going to water. You can do land marks with gunfire.

I always found the best time to introduce water obstacles to a horse or dog is after you work the snot out of them on a 90 degree day and then invite them to take a swim in a nice cool creek.
