Curious to know how many of you guys have had success hunting over your micro food plots this year. Define micro.... My plot this year is 2-3 acres with maybe 30 percent good growth of radishes and purple tops. Didn't do enough to take care of weeds early on and have yet to do a soil sample....a problem I plan to remedy this winter. I've got higher than normal deer density and a person can sit over my plot and see anywhere from several to a whole bunch of deer on any given day. Dad killed a buck and a youth killed a doe ....

To be more specific how about small areas in the woods like Hidy holes or secret spots. I guess these areas could be anywhere from a 30'x30' area to a couple acres. Whitetail institute has a seed mix out for such areas. I tried a 1/4 acre deep in the woods off of a trail that leads to a ag field. I was suprised how early the does found it and started milling around in it. A few even started bedding in it.

With these frigid temps and snow, right now is when you see if your food plots are doing any good. Standing beans are a huge attractant in these conditions.

I'm going to add beans to my 1st plot next year. Looking at a mixer of Oats (summer/fall), Turnips (fall), and beans (fall/winter). This should cover a good part of the season.

Last weekend on Saturday afternoon I snuck into one of our plot stands for an evening hunt. I was simply amazed at the amount of the radishes that now have the tops nipped off and or parts of the radish ate and even could see where the deer had pulled up some of the radishes out of the ground. Night and day difference from the weekend prior to this one!
Looking forward to seeing the plots this weekend. I bet the deer are camping out on the plots right now.

I planted some radishes this year too. The tops are gone but no actual radishes have been dug up. Not sure if there is even a radish there or not..?

you should be able to see the top of the radish above the surface of the ground.

I planted 3 acres of turnips/rape and oats this year. (Whitetail institute Pure attraction and winter greens) Tops were ate off by Nov. 1 and most of turnips and radishes have been dug up and ate per inspecting last night. ( No shortage of deer here.) Seems like I add acre or 2 every year and still cant keep up with the deer. Pretty close to 15 acres now. For sure adding a 6 acre field of forage soybeans and increasing my corn field from 3 to 5 acres. Will still have 4 acres alfalfa, 4 acres imperial whitetail clover and 2 or 3 acres of turnip mix to plant again in fall. Critters eat a bunch.

Curious to know how many of you guys have had success hunting over your micro food plots this year. I've never seen a deer with my eyes on my food plot during hunting hours in hunting season. They have typically visited it at night. Mine is not an opening surrounded by woods; it has woods on two sides. Next year, I will do what someone suggested when I first got permission to put one in, and this is to plan corn. The corn will provide the security they need. It really hasn't been that they didn't like what I had planted. We have plenty of corn around and they like it a lot for all it provides. Good lord willing, I will plant a couple acres of corn and the rest clover. I'm keeping it simple. John, let me know if you want some field corn seed (free). Have a family member who sells seed. He gives me his left over sample seed each year. Got 25-30 bags settings in barn. Couple bags do a acre so if you need 6-8 bags I'll get them for you.

Yes, I'd greatly appreciate it. I plan to do two acres .

I just can't tell you how much I appreciate it. I'm a giver; it's just the way I was meant to be. Givers don't take very well, but I'll sure take some corn. I'm so excited! I'm going to put a bed of straw in the middle of it in hopes that one will like it. This will tickle me if they do. I love these animals. I just think they are so amazing. Thanks boone!

Hey Woody,
Did you use the same cedar tree in your food plot that you had last year?

I planted a mixture of brassica, turnips and radishes. Honey hole is the name of it and the deer won't touch it in my area. I planted turnips another time before and same results. Deer just do not eat them in my area. I guess some areas the deer love them and other areas they have better things to eat.
