Recently picked up a savage 17 hmr. Hoping to use it on called in raccoons and foxes, and possibly the occasional coyote if the shot is close and perfect. I already have a 204 for a dedicated yote gun. My question is what are people's experience with the 17 hmr on coons/ fox?

Never shot a coon or fox with mine. But I have shot several ground hogs. Drops them in their tracks.

It works just fine on all three, coon, fox and yotes. Goes in and dosnt come out so its easy on the pelts.

Word on the street is they are even using them for feral hogs I think the effectiveness will rely on shot placement but... I'm not that familiar with the cartridge so I could be way off

I've only shot one a few times, but was kicking around the idea of getting one. I have a .17 MachII and 130 yds on squirrels or groundhogs is about max. They are really picky about wind too.

greetings I have no experience myself of one but some over here insist they are too small for the red fox we have here, i would imagine shot placement would be critical for quick dispatch and at what range would it have enough enerjy left??? And here is me wondering if my hornet with 35grn v max would be big enough for coyotes. I know one thing for sure it wll do nothng a 22 hornet or a 308 wont do. lol regards Billy

I would limit it to 100 yards max. The one I shot was 60 yards and it dropped him in his tracks.

I shot a yote in the head at 70yd from my bedroom window several years ago. It ran about 50yd to its death, bleeding bad. It was the 17gr v-max load. I shot a few coons with the 20gr xtp load and it seemed to do better. I prefer the 22mag for bigger critters. Deceased father in law said they killed many deer and turkeys in years past with 22mag in the hills of KY. Buddy and I have killed quite a few coons and woodchucks, but no comparison in trajectory after 125 yd with the 17hmr.

greetings I am going to agree with throbak yes smaller calibres will kill, a 22lr will do it in the head what one does not have that one gets with a bigger rifle is insurance if the shot goes a little wrong. Do you sell the pelts over there? over here the fur trade is non excistant nowadays. If so what price does one get for a good winter coyote pelt. regards Billy.

That is for skinned, fleshed and dried furs, not tanned. Picking a caliber/bullet is a balancing act between a clean kill and a clean kill without a large hole or two in the pelt which will diminish the value of the fur.

I bought a 17 hornet custom a author brown Barrell for my tc pro hunter, tack driver and has exact ballistics of a 223, great varmint gun , good up to 150 yds no problem . Very max 20 gr. Bullet will do a yote in just fine !

How was the fit and finish of the barrel?
