I don't know anyone who traps close by but I caught a Coyote tonight that had at one time chewed out of a trap it appeared in the past. You can see the one front leg is shorter. It had tried on this time but was as lucky. I haven't had a toe catch in these traps yet so it wasn't me. I guess that made this one twice as hard. Unfortunately it had a small rub and really dark but my brother in law is a new taxidermist and is going to do a shoulder mount on it. 3 more for my goal of ten this year.

It also could have been a bad shot too. A buddies first shot at one broke the front leg right about there. 2nd shot anchored it. The front leg was flopping.
From what I understand, chew-outs are on the area that is below the trap jaws. That area has the blood cut off, and there is no feeling. Then when they pull, there is nothing below the jaws and they pull out. Above the jaws would be a different story I think.

I assumed chew out as he about had done it this time on a very solid pad catch. It had been quite awhile ago but the coyote was a smaller male. It was definitely not happy I was there either. I laughed at your story because I shot a doe when I was sixteen or so and swore I put a good shot on it. It fell and laid there for a while before going over hill. After looking forever it was taken by my dad a few days later with a perfect hole from a 20 g slug about an inch above the hoof.

raymar, don't feel bad. My brother in law shot a 12 point and couldn't understand why it didn't drop.. That evening I was hunting the same spot, saw a basket 6 magically appear out of a CRP field. I shot it and it had a perfect 12ga forster slug hole in it's hind leg between the Achilles tendon and the leg bone. It was like there was a big paper punch out there.....
Since it was private property, and 120 acres, I imagine that the 12 pt had some serious ground shrinkage........

You got it essup What happens is the area below the jaws become numb from the lack of blood flow. They chew at the trap and the pad or toe below that is what gives so they think they are doing something to the trap. They would never chew above the trap jaws, they would feel that.

Congratulations!
I had to pull my traps. It was just too far for me to ethically check my traps every day. I'll rest up and save some gas money. It takes 1/2 tank of gas to get there.
I'm sure I'll have lots of questions when I get one.
