They tried to buy it a few years back but they could not get the money.
This was about the time that the Indiana National Guard took about 1/5 of the Atterbury FWA away from DNR.
It was a couple of years after the Newport Army Depot was closed and used for local public development.
We have lost a lot of public or semi-public ground in the past 10 years. Only bright spot has beed the Heathly Rivers Initiative which will hopefully total about 70,000 acres.

I'm excited about the healthy river initiative its the first major project that I've watched from its infancy and I hope that we get this land sooner than later central Indiana really lacks in public hunting opportunity

Surely Woody could be able to buy two properties like that with what he could get out of this site!

I was at the DNR office today to pick up my bridle tags for horses. So I asked the lady about Minni. She said she wasn't for sure what was going on. But a guy in the back came out and said that it's officially closed April 1st. That the state was removing the last of its personal property and then it would all be for sale to private ownership.

Until you see a for sale sign on it, I wouldn't bet on a lot of Peabody's ground being offered to the public. I'm betting someone, probably from Evansville, ends up with most of it.

was Newport not a draw hunt? It was a draw hunt for several years, then 9/11 happened and it was shut down to the public while the VX was being neutralized. Once the VX was gone but still owned by Army, it was opened back up to the public in draw hunts until Army closed the base and turned it over to the private owners. It was a great place to deer and turkey hunt. Would have loved to upland hunt quail, rabbits and pheasants were in that place. I was lucky to have one of those great jobs there and got to hunt all the areas, not closed due to past contamination, inside and outside of the fence. I loved that place! Unfortunate IDNR couldn't snag it but as you know there isn't much around there and to take away any potential jobs wouldn't be good either.

I killed one of my best bucks in 1998 on an archery hunt. The first year they held draw hunts it was truly "world class",man I miss hunting there! ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) ?

I would much rather just have the government type jobs Here instead of the 9$ an hour factory jobs

I wouldn't count on that. Peabody office in Evansville is closed. Some people lost their jobs who were based out of there and some others were scattered to the wind to find placements for them.
I work for Peabody and the situation for the coal market is dire, more so that what is relayed to the media. I could see mini being sold here in the coming future.

MUTC is a mile, maybe mile and a half, away from the north fence of Big Oaks. They better hire some Mexican drug smugglers to get that tunnel built.
