Any of you fellas know if a 450 Marlin is too big to be legal in Indiana for deer?

A quick look at specs shows a case length of 2.10" so it exceeds the limit of 1.80" case length for a deer legal rifle in Indiana. I do not know if this cartridge is an option in a handgun setup.
edit to add, guys are taking the 45/70 and shortening it to 1.80" to make it legal so I suppose you could do the same with this round?

It should work. Only issues i forsee is maybe needing heavier bullets for length, and the sizing and crimp die might cause you trouble. As always, start low and work the load up, watching for pressure signs.

Yep - Case would have to be trimmed. If you have one fine, more of a handloaders round as they haven't been made in a little while now and it really doesn't offer the handloader anything over the 45-70 that is worth talking about.

The 450 Marlin is just a 45/70 with a belt added. Marlin wanted to hot rod the old 45/70 but added the belted case to keep folks from using the new round in older guns not strong enough for the new loading.

Any of you fellas know if a 450 Marlin is too big to be legal in Indiana for deer? Not really if used in heavy or wooded hunting areas. I have a Remington Model 722 chambered for the .458 X 2" AMERICAN, very similar to the .450 Marlin. When loaded with 42 grains of IMR-4198 behind a 300 grain Hornady Bullet, it's great for hunting Deer.

The 450 Marlin is just a 45/70 with a belt added. Marlin wanted to hot rod the old 45/70 but added the belted case to keep folks from using the new round in older guns not strong enough for the new loading. Also the belt is not the same size as other belted magnums so it is brass specific. So if its not stamped 450 marlin it will head-space wrong. The belt has been modified to prevent it from chambering in smaller-bore 7mm Magnum or .338 Magnum rifles. The .45-70 and .450 Marlin cannot be cross-chambered, but rifles chambered for the .458x2 can be modified to fire the .450 Marlin. The .450 Marlin and the .458×2-inch American are very similar cartridges. The cartridges are essentially the same length. However, the .450 Marlin will not chamber in the .458×2-inch American as the belt on the .450 Marlin is considerably wider. The .458×2-inch American should not be fired in a .450 Marlin as failures may occur. While not interchangeable, the .458×2-inch American will do anything the .450 Marlin is capable of accomplishing.

For dimensions of most cartridge cases you are likely to encounter you can check the following link: stevespages.com/page8d.htmCartridges of the World is also an excellent printed source of such information.
