It seems that the number one rule of duck hunting is don't talk about duck hunting. hahaha Although, if anyone would like to give some tips to a new guy It would be appreciated. Been hunting just about every other animal in Indiana since 14 but waterfowl is the new endeavor. Thanks ahead for any help!

Don't take up duck hunting you will be better off financially and mentally. Duck hunting is not a sport for the faint of heart you don't just say I want to be a duck hunter it's something that is in your makeup that you were born with. Duck hunters live for miserable weather days, duck hunters need to be able to identify a bird on the wing in a moments notice and they need to very mindful of the numerous laws pertaining to the sport. You will need more and more and even more equipment then any other sportsman for maybe the exception of fisherman. And last but not least DUCKS HATE INDIANA.

If you know of a person that waterfowl hunts try to fo with them.
If you have a spot with birds it will be easier to get someone to go with. Think of corn fields too. Lots of ducks and geese killed on dry land.

How close are you to Indy? I'm a citybilly in a southern suburb. I'll take you, but I've never really been before. I just have the stuff. We can learn together.

I'm actually up in the Fort Wayne area. From NWI but going to be living up here for work. I've heard good things about some spots down by Indy though. I'm sure my scouting will take me that way eventually. Seems like Northeast Indiana doesn't have the abundance of spots that NWI does.

I would guess NW would be better, but I really don't know. I know there are a lot of lakes NEI. I have a buddy who lives in Portland In, and he has a house on a lake about 1+ hours north of there. Lots of lakes around there. He just doesn't hunt. Some day I'll go on a hunt. Good luck to you.

Best advice.....GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN. It's a terrible habit. Lol Why didn't I ask this same question the year before? ? Have added a bag of duck dekes, a mojo deke, borrowed some geese dekes, bought a new pair of chest waders along with some calls and trying to figure out how to add an easy take off blind on my jonboat-all this and still haven't taken the first duck!!!! BUT I'm going out this afternoon for some field geese that I've been patterning for a few days

Also a new waterfowler! I hunt geese mostly. Live in Fishers, hunt in Marion, but would love some property to hunt closer to home. I am a commercial photographer and have a drone that I will trade aerial photos of property or portraits for hunting permission if anyone has leads on farmland near Hamilton county! Would love to tag team a hunt as well to glean knowledge if anyone is interested. I have just enough gear to squeak by.

We have three farms down in Wabash area but other than that I don't go that far south.

Leo cedarville reservoir is a great spot close to Fort Wayne. Lots of coves and thick stuff you can tuck up in.

Remington , take every opportunity to hunt with some of these members , I sure did , and I will admit that when we ALL first meet it felt like I've known these men for years . I did a 3 hour road trip to go rabbit hunting with these fellow hunters . We didn't see nothing the beagles didn't give chase , but we had a blast talking .

Buy used decoys , it will save you a few dollars , wait a couple of months after the season is over , those are when you should get the best deals , many hunters don't have the room for them , some thought that they will like water fowl hunting and ended up hating it . Go to the flea markets , on line , in here , Facebook even has a site where hunters are selling decoys , practice calling on live birds at your local lake , river if it's legal , scout , scout all spring and summer , fall . Practice shooting your shotgun with the type of shells and choke that you will be using . Find out when the waterfowl lottery is . KEEP POSTING IN THIS FORUM for help and advice . And as always take a kid hunting
