I ordered a black Barnett Raptor FX from Cabela's in mid-September for $299, on sale from from $399. Since this was my first crossbow, I had it shipped to the Noblesville store where it would be assembled for me.
After picking it up and bringing it home, something looked amiss, but I couldn't place my finger on it. After I shot a couple of arrows, I figured it out real quick. It had been assembled wrong and the cables were on top of the rail. I took it back, Cabela's fixed it, replaced the bolts, and gave my 20% off any purchases that day.
Fast forward - I could never quite get the scope zeroed. It was always off little to the right, even though I had the scope maxed out to the left. So much so, that the windage adjustment knob stripped out. About that time I also managed to break the bolt retention spring. I talked to customer service, and they sent me a new scope and a new arrow retention spring.
The new scope still wouldn't zero. I rotated the scope rings to no avail. It just wouldn't quite go far enough to the left. I ended up replacing the scope. Still too far left. Got new scope rings and still no joy...and that is when the straw that broke the camel's back happened.
I shot a bolt (properly nocked) and it made a funny sound and flew way off target. I retrieved the arrow and one vane was off and the nock was gone. I looked at the bow, and the string had come off one of the cams and the string had been pinched to where the serving had been severed.
I called Cabela's to return it and upgrade to a better xbow. I had purchased about 100 days prior, and they will only accept returns up to 90 days. Two different customer service reps recommended I return it to the store and see what the store would do for me.
So I went to the store today and was originally told they don't accept crossbow returns. After explaining all of the problems I had had, and telling him the customer service reps I talked to on the phone would've taken back two weeks ago, he finally agreed to let me return it and put the money on a gift card, which then could be used toward a different crossbow. He also told me they have A LOT of problems with Barnetts, regardless of the price range of the xbow. He said Barnett's customer service is great to work with and are very good about shipping out new parts so the dealers can fix the problems; however, they seem to have poor quality control and require a lot of repairs.
The Raptor has great potential. I really liked the bow, Barnett just need to fine tune their quality control.
As for the new xbow, I was almost hooked on the Wicked Ridge Raider (on sale for $599), but it sold out yesterday. I considered the PSE Fang, but ended up settling on the Carbon Express SLS in Highland Kryptik camouflage, which was on sale for $450 The guy in the archery dept who finished helping me said they see a lot of Barnetts come back, but he has never seen a Carbon Express come back. This bow is only 17 inches wide uncocked, and 13.5 inches cocked. Reportedly if shoots bolts at 355 fps. My expected delivery date is January 12...
In the end, Cabela's did me right...although I wasn't sure they were going to at first. After I got home I went online and gave them props on their online survey. Now I'm just waiting for my new xbow to hurry up and get here
