I will say don't sell to pike lumber unless you have your own forester come in & tell you the timber value first. Best thing to do is have a private forester negotiate the sale...a few hundred $$ spent will get you a lot more $$ in the end. A good forester will have several timber buyers out to bid at the same time, that way they all see who else is there& keep their pencils sharp. If you need help finding one I could help... Thanks for the info, where I'm living now I have 5 private loggers within a half hour of me but know of none in Indiana. Was looking at Pike Lumber so thanks again for the heads up. Was thinking of taking my time and logging it myself and skidding the logs out and find someone to come buy and truck them out.

Trophy paradise is correct. Had a forester show me bis for a set amount of standing timber on one piece of land the bids went from 18,000 to 45,000. If you just select a logger it can cost you a lot. He also said do not sell to pike. Said they leave all the pallet lumber in the woods and just pay for the good stuff they take at pallet lumber price

Good advice by trophy paradise. I live in Cass county too and have a little experience selling timber.
Quite a few years back, I did some logging, and since I had always gotten mailers from Pike, I called them to take a look and give me an offer. Their offer just didn't feel right, so at a friends advice I hired an independent forestry consultant to evaluate the woods, mark trees for harvest and estimate board footage. He then took bids which came in three times higher than Pikes initial number, and supervised the logging to prevent unnecessary damage to woodlot.
My advice is to hire the independent forestry consultant to help you out. It was well worth the few hundred dollars it cost me.

What part of cass you live/hunt in?

Contact four local county extension office. They will be able to provide you information with a local forester or contact the Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources Forestry Division.

Budd - I used a guy from Walton, who has long since retired. Go online and look up the Indiana Woodland Steward Magazine. If you have land in classified forest program, you get this magazine a couple times per year.
On line you can see PDF copies of the magazine, and in the back pages of it quite a few forsestry consultants advertize exactly what you are looking for.

My brother had his timbered two years ago. The company did a great job. Only thing left was the tops of the trees. They even left a good number oak/nut trees for the wildlife. I will ask and get the name.

Be careful cutting and skidding logs yourself, a lot of money can be lost by doing it wrong. Presentation is key on high dollar trees. Depending on what you have, I can recommend a smaller buyer that has his own crew and equipment and will pay you top dollar. He will give you honest advice for free. If you are not using Pike you have already made the best decision you can make.

I would strongly suggest figuring out What YOU from your woods You want Money or wildlife enhancement or what a lot of the people you contact you will find are interested in What they can make.. I Sold what I wanted Not what a forester or timber buyer or consultant would have done I picked what I wanted to sell I didn't kill vines ,girdle trees or sell everything they wanted to buy They'll want to cut trees that you will only get 50 or a hundred dollars for I had Rather have the tree than 50 dollars

Piece of advise, if your woods is part of a larger woods that doesn't all belong to you make sure you know and clearly mark you property lines so that your neighbors trees don't get cut down. I would also have a bunch of guys on line who want and are willing to cut the tops for firewood, cut them asap while there are trails in the woods from the equipment, you wait to long the new sunlight will cause the ground cover to go crazy.

Planning on leaving most tops where they fall. Complete clear cut, more for rabbits but I'm sure the deer will use it as a bedding area. Thicker the better.

What do you get if you cross a lawyer, a used car salesman, a politician and a carnival barker?
A Pike Lumber timber buyer!
I had them at my place to make an offer. $5000 for 128 trees - red oak, poplar, white oak, cherry, ash, and a few walnuts to boot. Nice big straight poplars and red oaks, some are 30'without a branch. I didn't really need to sell, but I had in mind maybe getting enough $$ to dam up the hollow after they logged it and making a nice 8 acre lake.
So, I left it alone because I like to walk around in it.
The farmer next to me timbered a sizable plot a few years back - he hired a pro to pick the trees to sell, let a bunch of buyers look, and then had them all come to his house one evening for a bidding war. He swears that is the way to go.

Contact a consultant forester. They should ask about your objectives and only select the trees that you want removed. They can get you the best prices for your timber. www.findindianaforester.org/
