span870, I fully understand and respect your position on the subject. As I've gotten older and have put more hunting seasons under my belt, I too care less about killing a deer. What I do still enjoy is trying to figure them out. Where to place the stands and watching a plan all come together. Just last night I had one deer literally right below my stand and another 10 yards away. I like being able to get away with that on an animal with such keen senses. Did I shoot either one? No...I just watched them pick around and wander off. There was a forkie earlier in the evening that made a scrape and wandered a bit in a grassy lane. Cool to watch, but I had no intention of shooting him either. A couple of seasons back, I had a nice 8 pointer 15 yards away on the opening day of gun season. I had my gun on him but instead of shooting, I watched him and the doe he was with feed and move on. I have killed similar deer in the past and told myself I didn't need to take him, but in the end I just didn't want to kill him. Maybe I'm reaching the stage you are in, maybe I too am getting close to calling it a day...I don't know. But I've hunted a bit this bow season and I'll hunt opening weekend of gun and see where it takes me. Regardless, I will admit that squirrel hunting and rabbit hunting are starting to sound like fun again. Maybe it's just time to enjoy ALL of it some, instead of focusing so much on deer. Finally, thanks for the post. I found your honesty refreshing and enjoyed reading it. Jim Anytime you want to drop some dogs down, let me know. Always looking for guys to run with. Duff can tell you, they don't mess around. Beat be quick getting to it if you shoot one or it'll be gone.
