Not giving it up are you? Yep. Just doesn't do it for me anymore. I have been blessed over the years to have some great ground to hunt and a job that allowed me to travel to some great deer states. I've killed more than my fair share and don't have much more room on my walls. I actually still have one in the freezer from two years ago that I need to get mounted. To be honest, and this is just me, trophy hunting ruined it for me. Way too much pressure and it became like a job. The last two I killed there was no excitement, just felt like work day was over. To be kinda corny and soft, the emotion of taking a deers life just got to the point that it was to much. Not that I'm against deer hunting in any way, I've just killed enough. Going soft? Don't know. I'll be out for opening day of gun just because it's a tradition, but not hunting. I do enjoy taking kids and guys that never killed a deer. I get more excitement out of that than if I kill one myself. I'll stick to my beagles. It's like catch and release hunting. As long as I see the bunny once, my hunt is a success. And turkey. Love me some turkey hunting. Even then I still have to go through several other kills before I carry a gun. I guess I'm just getting old and soft. Just seen too much death over the years. I supposed now I'm giving back. Sorry so long winded.

greetings Span and Throback my friends I understand every emotion you have better than i reckon anyone else on the forum, but i dont let other peoples values bother me trophy wise or not, friend or not, do what they want i do what i want It is a lot more political over there than it is here i have noticed that, but it would not worry me one bit, i never get involved and i never listen to the political nonesence over here, i go out in the morning and i come back in the evening and in between i try to meet as few idiots as i can.
On thursday i have the rangers meeting i tell you now dont ask me what went on i wont be able to tell you because the first thing i do when i get into the room is switch my hearing aid off, not intrested in there bull. lol Sorry you are packing in hunting, i can never see me doing that it has been my whole life, bought my house, brought up my family and kept me fed and warm, i will ease off a lot but never give up totally, and i will always be looking for new challenges. regards Billy

I still get pretty torn up with all the emotions at the moment of truth, but the excitement and anticipation of the between times has begun to wane. It does begin to feel like an obligation sometimes.

Have to kill a bigger one year after year. It turns into a job after awhile. The last one I killed I climbed out of the tree and there was no excitement. I asked myself why I killed the deer and for the life of me I could come up with no answer. Last year I went out stalking in the snow, something I enjoy immensely. Found a deer in its bed, stalked to about 50 yards. I rested the gun against the tree and put the crosshair of it. For the life of me I couldn't pull the trigger. I sat there and watched that deer for about 15 minutes and it had no idea I was there. If I told anyone how big he was; aa. many wouldn't believe me b. Many would think I was crazy. I turned around and walked away. Right then I knew I was done. The most fun I ever had deer hunting was years ago in the hnf. There was no pressure and the excitement of seeing a deer was enough. I see alot of "trophy" hunters and know few "TROPHY" hunters. The guys I know that fit the second just don't seem to have fun doing it. I also see a few and know many that eventually can't handle the pressure and do whatever it takes to kill one. I don't know if its the pressure that they put on themselves or others put on them. You'd be surprised the numbers of guys that will eventually kill a farm deer and pass it off as wild just to hold that standard that is self imposed or placed on them. How many do you see that end up with poaching charges. It's in all hunting. Whether it's deer, turkey, waterfowl. Just to be put on a pedestal over other hunters. Someone on this forum posted about years ago it wasn't about inches of antlers. The question was, you get a buck? Yep 8 pointer or 160 pounder. This isn't about bashing trophy hunters. I respect anyone that can put the time and effort into and do it legitimately. It just ruined it for me and the amount of deer I've killed in my 25 years of deer hunting just reached a level I called it enough.

I respect everything i have read and if that is your decision while sad, so be it. I look on my hunting over her a little different, i never put myself under pressure like that, and yes i do let deer, and everything else go from time to time. just last week a doe and kid walked because i went"soft" i am not intrested in how big a deers antlers are, never have been. Same deer stalking and wildfowling and shooting, i do these things for the total experience, and like you sometimes, i walk away and dont touch anything that i could of, and do you know something i feel real good being able to do that.
Instead of shooting, use your skills and photograph the wildlife, its a good little earner over here. regards Billy

Pretty soon most of us older guys will give-up hunting at some point-in-time. Due to either health issues, or just becoming tired of Sport Hunting. I turned 66 years old this past month, but I still have interest in hunting and wildlife conservation. Next year I might start seeing the "Handwriting-On-The-Wall" and give-up some Hunting time. I have already given-up Rabbit Hunting due to knee pain, and too many hills here to climb, but still strong on Squirrel Hunting.

Lol, you can catfish and run beagles. You got too much gear anyways I love taking guys out with the dogs. Nothing better than watching someone chase the dogs and the rabbit all over the place and not staying in one place and letting the dogs do their job. Then you get the guys that forget their H.I.P. number. Always a load of fun.

span870,
I fully understand and respect your position on the subject. As I've gotten older and have put more hunting seasons under my belt, I too care less about killing a deer. What I do still enjoy is trying to figure them out. Where to place the stands and watching a plan all come together.
Just last night I had one deer literally right below my stand and another 10 yards away. I like being able to get that close to an animal with such keen senses. Did I shoot either one? No...I just watched them pick around and wander off. There was a forkie earlier in the evening that made a scrape and wandered a bit in a grassy lane. Cool to watch, but I had no intention of shooting him either. A couple of seasons back, I had a nice 8 pointer, 15 yards away on the opening day of gun season. I had my gun on him but instead of shooting, I watched him and the doe he was with feed and move on. I have killed similar deer in the past and told myself I didn't need to take him, but in the end I just didn't want to kill him.
Maybe I'm reaching the stage you are in, maybe I too am getting close to calling it a day...I don't know. But I've hunted a bit this bow season and I'll hunt opening weekend of gun and see where it takes me.
Regardless, I will admit that squirrel hunting and rabbit hunting are starting to sound like fun again. Maybe it's just time to enjoy ALL of it some, instead of focusing so much on deer.
Finally, thanks for the post. I found your honesty refreshing and enjoyed reading it.
Jim
