Several cougars have been documented to travel from the resident population in South Dakota to Midwest states. There was even a cougar that was tracked by biologist from South Dakota to Connecticut a few years ago. There are several articles online about that.
Cougars with radio collars in South Dakota have been documented to travel well over 500 miles while looking for new territory. Missouri has had close to 50 different cougar confirmations in recent years, so have several other Midwest states.
A lot of biologist believe many of the cougars that are now being seen and confirmed in the Midwest are originally from populations in places like South Dakota. As the population grows in the Great Plains states more cougars are starting to move east into the Midwest.
