Some buddies and I shot some at Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota while we were out there chasing turkeys several years ago. You may check that out, but I have also heard that Colorado is a great place to get into some.

I go every year, actually I go about 80 miles north of the Rosebud Reservation in South Dakota and I hunt on prvate land.To brag a bit,I've actually taken one at 535 yards with a 22-250, but 500 yard kills are very common with it,this past year I took along a new rifle,a .204 Cooper, made some fantastic shots with it but as it was the first time I'd really shot it at any long range I did about what I thought it would do..this year it'll be a different story for the .204. The guy I shoot dogs on has about 14,000 acres that I lease each year, mainly for pheasant hunting but after the pheasant are killed each day...it's dog time!!!!!!

I would suggest a trip to Wyo., hunt just south of Casper in Area 32. You'll be given free or nearly free access on private land and there is also plenty public land there as well. Plus, there are millions of rabbits. Buy a small game license and shootyour limit each day till you get the possession limit. Also a lot of jacks with no limit. Oh yeah, plenty of p-dogs there too. You'll want to stay at the Sunset Bar, which has 10 rooms in the back for cheap on a weekly rate. Hunt down along Bates Creek Rd.
Might as well time it during Oct. and kill a few antelopes as well.

I have been to the Rosebud are twice, but not in the last couple of years. The first trip we shot private land and had a ball. The second trip we tried to improve on our opportunities and went to the reservation. You could get an "unguided" license that allowed you to hunt certain areas of the reservation without an Indian guide. Most of the dogs have been shot out of the easily accessible areas. You can buy a cheaper license that requires you to hire an Indian guide. Finding one is easy, finding a good guide is tough. The guide is supposed to stay with you during the shoot, most don't. You pay the guide $50 per day and then he takes you to his cousins place and he wants money too. Ask for references! Many of the large prairie dog towns in the Mission SD area have been poisoned for the purposes of improving the range for cattle. Do your homework and you can have a good hunt. You hear alot about alcohol abuse and other social ills in the tribe, they are certainly there but you can see that in any population. Our guide saw we could shoot and tried to use us to clean up some areas around his homestead. Low numbers and bad weather didn't do much for our chances. The guide apologized and gave us a price break but we still wasted 7 days and about $800 apiece in expenses.
