A friend told me that you must put a deer stop on a snare before use in Indiana, but I can not find anything about any stop requirements in the hunting and trapping guide. It would seem that if the stops are required, there would be obvious info available.

I have posted the portion of the administrative rule that addresses snares below. The relaxing lock is only required if the snare has a circumference of more than 15 inches. I do not have a hunting regulation book in fron of me so I cannot advise which page this information would be on. However, it has a section on furbearer/trapping which has a subsection that provides information at it pertains to snares. If you follow this link, it should take you to the page on the electronic version of the hunting guide showing this particular section. let me know if you have any other questions. www.eregulations.com/indiana/hunting/furbearers-trapping/(g) A person must not use a snare to trap a wild animal except upon land owned by the user or with the written permission of the landowner. No snare shall be used that permits a circumference greater than fifteen (15) inches unless: (1) at least fifty percent (50%) of the loop of the snare is covered by water; or (2) the snare employs a relaxing snare lock (a lock that will allow the snare's loop size to increase once pulling tension is no longer exerted along the snare from its anchored end).
