Well, I traded my compound vertical bow for a Barnett Velociraptor X Bow. Reading a lot of mixed reviews on them. I need some help with care and proper maintenance help. I know to wax, heavy carbon bolts only, rail lube. Does it matter if your draw hooks are up or down when you cock it?

I have a Barnett Jackal. I love it! I have never heard your question about hook direction addressed.
Truth is, I have tested all different ways of cocking mine, including by hand, and have noticed zero difference in accuracy. So my opinion is that it would not matter.

I should always discharge the bow after hunting with a bolt? Never store it cocked? Stretch the string?

I will leave mine cocked between am and pm hunts, but I always shoot it after a pm hunt. On that note, I do not like to discharge mine into the ground. I carry a target with me and use that as a chance for a little more practice. Firing into the ground seems like a wasted opportunity to me.

Firing at a target after a hunt to discharge my crossbow also gives me peace of mind that my scope is still dead on.

I put hooks down on the string cocker. And I shoot mine into a block target I keep in the garage after I'm done hunting.

^^^^^ Ditto. I discharged mine into the ground once. Only once. The ground was soft and the arrow disappeared. I dug down as far as I could with my hand and never touched it. I also don't uncock it between morning and evening hunts.
I have a used POS bolt that I use just to shoot it to uncock it.

I use a discharge bolt. I have a quad and it is wonderful for me. I feel good shooting it at 65yds, but probably won't shoot at a deer this far. It's not that I don't think I could hit it, but it's the time factor. Mine shoots loudly. There is plenty of time for him to react at this distance. I don't mind missing, but sure would hate to just hurt him.
Now, in the heat of the moment, I really think I'm capable of doing something that I wouldn't it I had time to think about it, so I won't say never.

I learned after breaking my bolt retainer spring that hooks are supposed to go UP. I bought a discharge bag and discharge after every hunt. Later I learned you can make a discharge bag with old rags and a sandbag. Barnett says you aren't supposed to keep them cocked for more than ~4 hrs.

4 hrs wont cut it for me, sometimes I will be out from sunup to sundown. Hasn't seemed to affect my Barnett Revolutions performance any.

That is there recommendation on their FAQ page. Seems awful short to me, too.
