Earlier this week, group of us (6) hunted Atlanta State and Pigeon River State Forest areas in MI about 30-40 miles SE of Mackinaw City. We hunted 3 days and harvested 8 Woodcock and I got the only 2 grouse. The one pictured below was the second and larger of the two. Dogs performed great again as usual and a great time was had by all.

Congratulations man! That is really cool. First woodcock that I've seen. I'm curious how they got that name ...did you look at him from the underside?

This is a grouse. A guy staying at the same lodge but deer hunting said they call them Partridge over in Canada. Grouse field dress like pheasant, but are smaller, about size of Cornish hens at store. Woodcock are smaller and field dress like quail where you use only the breast. This one flushed out about 10-15 yards to my left and flew down the path clearing behind me, I turned around for an easy going away shot at about 30-40 yds, bird dropped dead in the brush. I never got a shot at Woodcock, only used two shells and got two grouse over the course of three days hunting.
