Greetings
Lat night my son Stuart came to our house from his Flatt to have a pick up of the side by side shotguns and see what felt right to him as we are away in two weeks time partridge shooting, he cannot use the semi auto it is not allowed over here on formal days were we all dress up in tweeds, breeks ties etc.
Last year he did not shoot well with my Scottish ales martin twenty bore(my favourite)
He got them all out lifted them all up in the bedroom and settled on the webley and Scott 700, this is a proper webley made in England but in pristine condition just like new.
Ok what came next i was waiting for, lol, daaaaaad is there any ducks coming in? yes Stuart but I'm not sure how many, daaaaaad can we have a go at them tonight?
So we went to the pond Stuart with the webley me with the 28 bore mc'nab highlander, i never took the dog as she had never been ducking before but i did have a dog i could call on five minutes away.
Ducks came in Stuart took a left and right out of the first batch, i never fired i just watched him have a go.
Next batch that came in i dropped one, Stuart also fired but i seen nothing come down, and i thought that was enough.
We gathered the fallen and as i turned away Stuart said what about the last one i shot,
We looked and looked but could not find it, i said i will have a look tomorrow for it, if it was wounded it would probably be on the pond and i would get it with the 410
Like i have heard on here many times if its dead it will be dead tomorrow, so very true.
Next day i went back i took the lab who is now two and just starting to train properly.i took her to where i thought i may of been firstly she found some fox poo and thought she would have a roll in that as they do, must think its some sort of perfume, lol
Once i got her settled and told her to hunt she went down a small beck(creek?) running down the side of the pond within three minutes she appeared back on the pond dam wall bringing a fine stiff mallard drake to me and delivered it right to hand a real classic retrieve.
To say i was pleased with her is an understatement, everything i have taught her has been hard work for some reason, like me she does not want to grow up, lol
So i know she finds deer, i know she retrieves duck, and that will do me.
She will settle down and improve with experience at everything she does.
I also have to report that Ellie the spaniel is loving retirement although she is partly deaf and going blind i fear.
regards
Billy
