I've hunted with Mathews compounds for years now and thought I'd try a crossbow, a Horton Storm RDX with AccuDraw.
The Horton AccuDraw crank cocking system enables me to use the crossbow with 165lb draw. It's noisy and slow but it works. I can use the Horton rope cocker maybe ONCE before I do probably some damage to myself. It's a straight pull rope cocker, not doubled up, so you are pulling the entire weight.
The biggest thing I've noticed is the crossbow is HEAVY. Must weigh 3 times what any of my Mathews compounds do.
My eyes are getting old so it's nice to have a scope.
A crossbow with scope will probably increase my range to 40, maybe 50 yards. Can't hit consistently at 40 with a compound and pin sight to chance it on a deer.
Crossbows are opening up archery deer hunting to lots of women and kids who can't use a compound. It's nice to make deer hunting a family sport.
Don't use field points on a broadhead cube target! I had a bolt buried to the vanes and broke the bolt trying to get it out. Cabelas block target.
Bolts will go right through those white Styrofoam targets from Walmart. I just spent 2 hours trying to find a bolt in my grass. A metal detector will help.
Looks like it's going to be nice to have an alternative with the Crossbow.

Get a Morrell bag target for field points. Best target for field points. I built a stand for my with a roof to keep it dry and been using the same bag for 5 years now. The one I have is 32" square with 16 spots.

I used one for a year just because. I found it heavy, cumbersome and awkward. Ill stick to stick n string myself. Ounces vs pounds. Perfect for a blind though imo

I second or third the bag target. I had a bolt stuck in a foam target to the fletching for about 6 months. Only when it was below freezing was I able to get it out.
I always use a rest for my x-bow, either a trigger stick bipod or something like that.
The thing that I don't like about them is that they are noisy - more noise than a vertical bow.
