Man, I think I'm going to get into trouble hunting by myself. I've see coots before, but the only way I identified it was by the way it acted in the water. I wouldn't know a mallard from a coot in the air. Maybe I need new glasses, but I'd rather buy a new pair of hunting boots. LOL

It is best to hunt with an experienced hunter...but we all started some how. A lot of places mallards and woodies will ve the primary birds. Now bigger places will get other nirds, like goose pond. It is hard to know what you may get there.
Study the birds. Look at pictures. Find the xity park roosts that get the birds by the hundreds if not thousands and watch, listen and learn. I went 10 yrs before I felt I could easily I'd a teal vs a wood duck. I would still pass up shots if I wasn't sure.
If you want to duck hunt you have to learn to I'd the birds before u pull da trigger. Or hunt with someone who can :-)
You are a master if you can pick out a black, mottled or hen mallard in flight. My guys is many would have hard time in the hand too.

Check around your area Jon. The DNR does some waterfowl workshops that have a duck ID course. That may help also. Great advice Duff.

They showed us how to set them up in the water; it really was valuable. They told me I could hunt anywhere on White River, but I'd be afraid to venture into Marion Co. If I get my deer early, I'll make a good effort to duck hunt even if I venture out by myself.
