I pulled in the drive today after taking Mom & Dad out to dinner and what do I see? A groundhog in the "backyard". Now, I haven't seen one this year yet, but I guess that he's been pretty smart up until now. Ysterday I did notice a hole near the barn that was plugged with fresh dirt, but no other traces of a 'chuck. He was munching on the grass, close to 75 Yds out, with the 100 Yd target frame in the background. ;D I pulled the car to where he couldn't see me, grab the dogs from the pen, throw them in the house and grab the 10/22. (The dogs would have raised a ruckus with me going out with a gun and not letting them out to get what I shot). I snuck up to the shooting bench, and he never knew that I was there. The .22LR did it's stuff, and there's one less woodchuck to dig under the buildings. He picked the wrong time and place to grab a meal for sure! If I thought he would have stayed around for a bit, I sure would have liked to see what a 75 gr. V-Max would have done out of the .257 Weatherby. ;D My buddy was using the range for his 300 Win Mag a few weeks ago and just as he finished sighting in @ 200 Yds, a chippie decided to hop on a stump @ 220 Yds. My buddy couldn't resist. He was amazed that the chippie just tipped over slowly after the shot. .30 cal in and out.

Tonight I was heading to an area designated by my family as the shooting range when 2 groundhogs walked right through the area. They weren't scared of me at all, but by the time I loaded my Blackhawk they were gone...maybe next time.

Saw 2 on my property recently, one on my trail cam by my salt block and one this weekend up in a big old Oak.
Plan on making them scarcy in the near future.
