Gear for waterfowling can be expensive. Over the years I've learned how to re-furbish my decoys and boats, the new stuff is just way to pricy. Besides I kinda like my old stuff, it's part of me and my style LOL.
In this pic are a couple decoys that I have re-painted and a picnic table. More about the table after the decoys LOL.
The bluebill is an old Carrylite I bought last year at a flea market. I got 3 of them and paid 3 bucks a piece for them. It is a super magnum and by today's standards they are around $150 bucks a dozen (or more depending on brand) The bills were in good shape, as were the heads, but the white was coming off all three of them. And if any of you out there know Carrylie decoys, you know this is a common issue after years of getting banged around the decoy bag or boat. White is a HIGHLY visable color to waterfowl. I bought a cheap $2 rattle can of gloss white paint and sprayed them. They work like magnets.
The drake mallard is a Flambeau super magnum I bought brand new almost 20 years ago. Two years ago, I re-painted the green head, yellow beak and all the white on it. (ring on neck, speculum and tail feathers) I did all this with cheap craft paint from Wal Mart. Notice the head, how it has a sheen to it. It's kinda hard to tell in the pic, but I used Christmas metallic green on it. It looks pretty close to a mallards head and really sticks out in the swamp. (I also paint my drake Wood Duck dekes with it.)
Now back to the table. Notice the color, kinda mud brown. It was a test run for the color I am using on my boat. I paid $5 for it off the clearance/bad mix rack LOL It is an exterior Dutch Boy paint. You can find these discounted gallons at any Wal Mart, Menard's or Lowe's. They usually have a special section for mis tints in the paint dept.

Nice to see advice on using things and getting by instead selling all the new tricks out there.

Looks really good Reafer. A good idea too. I'm not sure that Phil Roberson could pick those out from his $1000 decoys, but I wouldn't make the bet. LOL Mine have never been wet, but I hope to fix that this year. I did paint my boat. Joey on here showed us how he did it, so I gave it a try. Poor thing has never been duck hunting either.

Jon we could change that this fall . I have duck and goose calls and a few decoys . Let's get it on! I had some money when I first started hunting, and bought so much stuff. I'd really like to use it. When I bought it, I was so excited, and it still sits unused. I talked with my brother-in-law about it, and he says Indiana is not a waterfowl state. I said, but I have ducks in my little pond every year. He said, so you shoot two and that's all you get. Man, I would be so excited over one that I'd probably fall out of my boat.

Jon there is a pond like that at one of the hunt clubs I go to . But I think if we added attractants to keep waterfowl there you could end up with some happy hunts .

You got to start with the first one sometime! My first duck was a jump shoot off a small pond. Prob 200 mallards lifted right over me. One shot and down one came. My bro n law yelling for me to shoot again...I was floored and hooked. But the first time geese worked us in a field...I had the fever. Nothing better.
I miss those days for sure.
