Here's my dove plot. After we are finished we are gonna sow winter wheat and some other goodies for the deer.

I once planted about 3 acres of sunflowers and the only thing I ended up feeding was Yellow Finches by the hundreds.
When you mow the flowers if you can disk an area several time around or next to the flowers, doves like bare ground.

This is between 1/2 & 3/4 of an acre. We don't have a disk, so I'm gonna use the tiller attachment to turn it over. Last year I didn't have one sunflower mature because of the deer and turkey. Really looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

I would mow down 1/2 of the flowers about 1 week before season then don't shoot it till you get doves using it regular then hit them for a few hours each day but don't hunt them all the way to legal sunset. Let the birds get in each day and feed that way they will keep returning. If you continue to do this every year one thing to keep in mind is that doves like a nice size dead tree to stage in before hitting the flowers. This tree doesn't need to be next to the field but in or near their flight path, throw a nylon line over a high branch and then pull a spinning wing dove up into the tree it will draw doves like crazy. It might take a year or two to get it down right but tell me something that tastes better then dove wrapped in bacon and smothered with BBQ sauce lightly grilled. Using a two wire electric fence with some peanut butter smeared on it will keep the deer out.

Try marinating the doves in soy sauce for 15 minutes. Adjust the soak time to your taste. Still do the bacon wrap.

We like them w a slice of jalapeƱo or pinapple and wrapped w bacon and cooked on the grill. My 7 year old could eat her weight in them.

Friend of mine swears by dove hearts said he like to eat dove heart sandwiches and they are the best (of course he isn't the one stuck cooking them)

More than likely I'm gonna be the only one hunting over this. The way dad works he's not gonna he home much. I'll be mowing part of it down probably in the next 7 to 10 days.

Yeah it's getting hammered. Only killed a couple yesterday, but seen a ton. Took my 5 year old with me and he lost interest pretty fast, so we only hunted a little over an hour. Probably had 40 feeding when we pulled up on the ranger yesterday morning. Gonna hit it a couple evenings this week. I hunted some public ground over here in Ohio this week.

Good for you, next year you can work on improving the area. FYI dove hunting can be a lot of waiting or you can figure out their best flight times and there by minimizing your wait time. GOOD LUCK and enjoy.
