I have a general question for the serious trappers here-I have a friend who is having trouble with several skunks under her home-a bad deal to be sure.
What are the options for capturing and controlling these varmints? She`s already had a neighbor shoot and kill one-not a pleasant exercise-but this needs dealt with.
Any suggestions on practical steps I can take to get rid of this problem for her?

use live traps (mid sized are best-7x8x24). marshmallows make good bait. once captured you can slowly cover trap with old towel or blanket and then safely move/relocate with no problems or smell. To get rid of skunk odors where they have sprayed you can mix a solution of 1qt peroxide+1/4 cup baking soda+ 1 tsp dishsoap mixed in a bucket. to be on the up and up with the law you need to contact your local game warden within 72 hrs of capture and you need permission from the landowner whos proprty you are releasing on.

Landowners/tenants may trap outside the season. If they want someone to do it for them it needs to be someone with a Nuisance Wild Animal control permit ........which I assume you do not have.
trapper.......figured that would have been the first thing you would have told him! lol!

She`s a little concerned about the problem, and granted, I know nothing more than she does about trapping-even with live traps, but,I`d just be helping a friend.

If you had a trap, you could let her use it......but technically you can not set the trap/remove the animal, etc. She would have to do all of that since she is the landowner. If she doesn't want to, then she'll need to contact a nuisance trapper. You can provide her with this info for futher suggestions/nuisance trapper info: www.entm.purdue.edu/wildlife/wild.htm

That is one silly law! Let's make our citizens spend money hiring a nuisance trapper instead of letting a neighbor or friend help her out. Ridiculous!

I don't make the rules....just tell people what they are. No trapping outside the season unless you are a landowner/tenant, or a nuisance trapper. Its no different than hiring a mechanic, electrician, plumber, HVAC, landscaper, doctor, etc., etc. Unless you are a jack of all trades, you gotta hire somebody out to do something you can't? I do agree if we all relied upon our neighbors more like the old days, this world would be a better place. I guess we could change the law to state "a landowner/tenant, or their neighbor can trap....", but then where do you stop?

I know you don't make the rules MIG, and my comment wasn't meant to be a dig at you. I apologize if that's how you took it. The law could be changed to "a landowner/tenant, or appointee".

what kills me is the number of people who would call for my services and then act shocked that there's a fee involved (about 50%) and get irate and "how dare I charge them"!! That's why I dropped my nuisance lisence this year and went back to the 9-5.

...Any suggestions on practical steps I can take to get rid of this problem for her? Not "Legal Advice" but: In keeping with the law... Rent a room from her for a month or two (however long it takes to trap the critters). Signed contract & all - nice and legal. Makes you a "Tenant", gives you tenancy "rights".

I'm thick skinned anyway..........takes more than comments on a forum to get me going!

I don't see it as a silly law at all. It keep folks from doing things like this for a fee and then say " I'm just helping a friend out" or " Oh I just want to help this little old lady down the road"
Sure it may be legit in the case of Hunter480 but where do we draw the line?
things really need to be black and white
renting the room thing is a joke and a dishonest thing to do just to "get around the law"
Does she own any property that could be used for hunting or trapping? If so maybe a nuisance trapper would trade to work for permission? I do this from time to time
if she needed and electrician or plumber I'm sure she would pay for a professional so why not do the same for a ADC trapper? I mean if it's really that big of a deal for her
Hunter480, maybe you should consider getting your ADC permit so you can help others out with situations like this
