I usually wait till I hear shooting then I try to move in and set up real close to the hunters and shoot at the birds working their spread, most of the time I don't even take decoys.

No the best way to scout is to go on the forums and say "Hey I'm new to waterfowl hunting I just bought a dozen dekes and my gun last night and I'm going out tomorrow. Can you guys tell me where you hunt at and where all the public places are even though this information is readily accessible online? Needing some call recommendations I like the look of the duck dynasty call. Also how much hunter orange do you need to wear while duck hunting? Thanks!"

Ain't gonna lie, it never gets old to me when I see some poor soul walk on one of the waterfowl forums asking for hunting spots....and the inevitable silence that follows. Lol

Would this be Nate Jordan? Indeed :-) Man, I wish I could follow him. He needs a TV show, but he'd never talk to me then. One would think that a guy like that would have compassion on an old handicap guy like me. I would say a guy with half a heart, but he'd probably say that I have no heart at all. Surely the man wants to do a good deed every once in a while. I just can't think of a kinder deed, as a fellow hunter, to invite a broken down old man like me to join him on one of those successful hunt. God would surely smile on him ...well, maybe he'd just laugh at him, but... You get the point. Hey, I see those kids on TV getting dying wishes, can't I have one too??? Go figure...

You are ate up! Nate is a good dude...I can't hang with his hunting. I had my days but not any more. He is a good guy. I've never met him, but he's called me several times just to talk. He's just a good ol' boy. Hey, I did finally find a fella who will take me duck hunting. I have all the stuff, but it's still in boxes. I don't know where to go or how to do it, but all I need is one lesson. I can't really drive very far for hunting, so I needed someone close to me. I added dove hunting to my dying wish list ...and a few other things. I would say, "Hey, we only die once." , but I've already done it once. I'm not thinking I'll get another pass. I need to milk this dying thing as long as I can.

This is a good article, I've read it before. The only thing I could add is:
- know what pressure does to your hunting area. Especially on opening day. There will be A LOT of shooting and it effects bird movement.
-know whether it's an early morning, mid morning, afternoon, evening etc.........spot. (I've had the same experiences deer hunting, some spots are terrible in the morning but awesome at night)
- know EXACTLY where the birds are coming to on you possible new hunting spot. I've hunted many 2 acre ponds/swamps that I thought I had figured out. Until the birds landed at the other end of the pond at day break. Just because you see birds on a certain spot of the pond doesn't mean they came into that spot. They are pretty good at swimming and moving to their loafing area LOL
- if there are birds on the water when others come in, listen to how they react and try to mimic their calls. Sometimes silence is golden!
