I haven't seriously trapped for probably 20 years, but next year I think I'm going to start dryland predator/coon/mink line. My question is, do you guys run your traps in the morning or after work. In the past I always ran my traps in the morning, but after work would work so much better for me. Comments?

I don't see why it would matter.... If one works better than the other, go for it.

Most of your animals are caught over night so it gives them longer to pull out or your neighbor to see the animal in the trap. Killer traps would be best in that situation but do what you have to do.

This past month it has depended on the weather. Usually an hour after the frost melts, but right now it whenever I can swim the creek. A couple of days ago we waited until after work. The fog did not burn off down here until around noon, had a coyote waiting that had not had time to wear the grass off the catch circle.

I run half before work and half after work. I can't do it any other way. If you could run them all in the morning that would be best, but if you can't you can't!

I try to make it a point to run non-lethal sets before dawn, others when time allows.

A lot of your coyotes are going to be caught between darkfall and 2a.m. That means running the traps only in the evening is MORE LIKELY to leave an animal sitting for 20 hours than any other checktime.
Odds of the coyote and trap being stolen are fair, coyote getting out of the trap pretty decent and if you're lucky enough to have them both... the trap may be warped and mangled beyond rapair. Much less the set location. In my area it'd be a miracle for a fox to survive that long in a trap- last year I had 5 eaten out of the set.

It's been around 30 years since a buddy & I ran a trap line. Had 12 dozen sets. We each ran 1/2 of them before work each day. If the weather was bad & the trapping was good, we would run the remaing sets that we did not have time to in the morning after work.

Whatever. How do the ole boys on 3-4 day checks out west catch anything?I mean if they tear your traps up & get out anytime after you set them you are doing something wrong. Now theft on the other hand is a high probability.People cant seem to leave their hands off what aint theirs.Like the trap & critter just fell out of the sky!Set em & run em when you can,law states they must be checked ever 24 hrs here.
